The thing about creating a futuristic world is that you still need things in that world which operate in a way that we (in the present) can still understand. Everyone understands the concept of a USB drive.
If the film, instead, had a telepathic link that required sub-level password encryption that was authorised with bio-regulated systems matrix, the audience would be like WTF?
If the (created) future world had an amazingly advanced way of storing or transferring data, the film would probably need another minute to explain how it worked for that scene to work (where Greer is stealing data with his USB drive). It's easier for them just to use a USB stick. It still allows the story to progress.
