I Robot? I Robot was a movie that borrowed a few characters from Isaac Asimovs short stories in his Robot short story collections (I Robot contains 9 separate short stories). The movie wasn't based on any Asimov storyline whatsoever.

This one is much more akin to the four full 'Lije Bailey Robot books, in this case a story about "spacers", the humans who left Earth millennia ago to colonise 50 worlds and one of these is populated by humans that live on huge estates alone (and loath human contact) with their robot servants, companions, workers etc.

A murder happens (forgot the name of it) and Elijah Baley, an earth bound human detective is sent to this very strange planet (compared to the earth of his time where people are living in enormous domes in hive like blocks due to the population density.

This movie is basically taking that premise (humans living separate from each other with robot servants and a cop/detective solving a crime of other isolated "spacers") and turning it down to something that is easily turned into a scifi/crime/thriller.

Apart from the facts that both movies feature robots and James Cromwell, I'm happy to say the stories, as others above have said, are completely different.🐭

The pokt of this movie exosted way before I Robot.

Asimov wrote several stories on R. Daneel Olivaw. This was a bit like one of them.

It's more like Isaac Azimov's "The Robots of Dawn" featuring detetive Elijah Baley investigating a crime in planet Aurora.
