Pretty obvious Samy and Amy are probably involved in criminal stuff..

Obviously money laundering is a big part of it, but what do you think are the other areas of activity?

Drug trafficking, immigration smuggling?

A big big tipoff is when Amy wanted to fire the one waitress for asking "are you sure?" on an order and started screeching about calling the police, Samy almost busted a gasket -- he runs at her beseeching, "oh no no no oh no no no you cannot call the police."

The little light bulb went off in Samy's head -- he does not want the cops in there, in any way shape or form or reason about anything.

This is of course an OPINION, not being stated as a legal fact.

Well, someone on the board posted that Amy has a record for committing fraud but I'm not exactly clear on what it was.

Anyways, those people are psychos with or without a criminal record. I think it was a huge waste of time for Gordon Ramsay to go to the restaurant.

If Sammy DOES get deported, what's going to happen to Amy?

She was caught applying for fraudulent loans or something like that...

I've thought all along there was something MORE to Amy and Samy than just their restaurant. I really think it's a front for something...else. However, that's just my opinion since there's no way I can know for sure. Something illegal, obviously, but what? I don't know. Drugs crossed my mind at one point, but I don't think that's it. Samy gives off a very definite underworld vibe. I can see him in some mob-related activity, maybe loan sharking or something. For me, I think the light bulb moment was when Amy was called out for buying those delicious looking desserts she CLAIMED to have baked. Keep in mind the name of the place, Amy's Baking Company. But they're not actually baking? Interesting...

I don't think the restaurant is necessarily a front for anything. Given how delusional Amy is, I think she really does believe that she is a gifted chef. Maybe she is running from a difficult childhood or teenage period. That could be why she is so paranoid, hyper-sensitive to criticism and aggressive in standing up to bullies, real or fictional.

But where did they get the $1 million to start up the restaurant? (In the episode, the couple said that they spent $1 million to start it up.) He says that he was in real estate in Las Vegas. He also spontaneously spits out that he is "the gangster" during one confrontation with Ramsay.

Various websites are claiming that he has a history of drug smuggling convictions in France or Germany, where he is supposedly banned. There are also claims that she used to be known as Amanda and was convicted for fraud (using someone else's Social Security number to obtain bank loans). Seems like there is some or a lot of truth behind this, but I don't claim to know all of the facts and details.

Based on all that, I'll go with the restaurant being legitimate, but that the start-up money could easily be the result of real estate shenanigans (because we certainly know there was a lot of outright fraud going on around the U.S. leading up to the 2007-2009 Great Recession). Or it could be money from Samy's previous "career" as a drug smuggler in Europe or the Middle East.

They probably thought they could get the show producers to spring for a complete remodeling job as is done in many episodes.

However this plan went off the rails when they pissed Ramsay off so fast and so completely he called the whole thing off before they even got to any of his 'renovation plans.'

Also it was much remarked upon that ABC was actually very clean and well maintained so maybe GR and the producers said, 'a remodeling job is not what they need.'

Actually, ABC was SO clean and well-maintained, to put it bluntly, it didn't really appear as if a working restaurant was actually in operation on the premises.

I don't believe she wanted to get a remodel on her million dollar restaurant. She was pretty direct in the show, saying she wanted someone with Gordon's reputation to contradict the internet trolls.

reply

well if that's what she wanted she blew it bigtime, if anything the show proved that the 'internet trolls' were right; if anything, things were way way worse.

If she wanted GR to help rebuild her reputation she probably should have waited more than about 15 seconds after he walked in the door before launching into a shrieking screeching screaming fit against him.

Just over a week ago after coming out of a movie across the parking we decided to stroll over to see what was going on at Amy's. It was a Saturday nightand just before 9:30 p.m. in the middle of the busy snowbird season here. Well according to the hours posted on the front door they should have been open until 11:00 p.m. but they were closed! The place was empty with no one inside and it was clear they had been closed for awhile.

We had walked by Amy's when we arrived and while it was open (just before 7:00 p.m.) there was only ONE table with customers.

I would not be surprised if money was being laundred, not that there is any proof but if it walks and quacks like a duck.....

Exactly. She wasn't looking for help from Gordon; she was looking for validation of her belief that her place was perfect, and the Yelpers were bullies.

Denial is the unwillingness to accept reality.

The simple truth is that often, people who seek help resist it once it's given. Some more passionately than others. This is because the truth is hard to swallow and can be painful. What they often want is for the world to change to their desires, when it's usually themselves that need to change.

In Sammy and Amy's case, they didn't truly want help fixing their problem. They wanted Ramsay to tell the world they were right and the haters were mean, lying bullies. Reality slapped them in the face.

Not that they deserve any defense, but when trying to convince people, trust in the advice-giver needs to be established. Flames on websites and an outsider (Ramsay) with a camera crew don't really foster trust. It's somewhat natural to resist these things. This is why resistance is a common thing in Ramsay's "Nightmares," just not to the degree of Sammy and Amy.

Reality took a swing but didn't bring them down. They have knowledge-proof skulls.

In the revisit I just watched, a KN staff member took a film crew back to let Amy & Samy have their say. They're JUST AS CRAZYPANTS AS BEFORE. But Samy said something interesting about, "havingthe money to keep the restaurant going until the stupid people get unstupid."

It's probably HIS "business", but he needs her fronting with the "chef" fantasy.

reply

You are probably right.

They are probably involved in small time crimes. If they were into big time drug dealing or something like that I doubt they would have allowed cameras on the premises.

I respectfully disagree.  I think it's precisely because they ARE involved in something big that they've brought all this attention to themselves. Kind of like the opposite of "where there's smoke, there's fire." In other words, by bringing attention to themselves they're hoping it will make them look innocent of doing anything bad, because who in their right mind would bring all that attention to themselves if they were doing something big-time illegal?

Scottsdale 'Kitchen Nightmares' restaurant to close

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - A Scottsdale restaurant that gained reality TV notoriety after an appearance on "Kitchen Nightmares" will soon close its doors.

Co-owner Amy Bouzaglo says she and husband Samy Bouzaglo are in final negotiations to sell the property.

But they are keeping the Amy's Baking Company name.

Bouzaglo says she plans to focus on making desserts for a Phoenix-area restaurant group as well as online instructional cooking videos.

The couple drew outrage and ridicule on social media after being featured on a May 2013 episode of chef Gordon Ramsay's "Kitchen Nightmares.

In the segment, they were seen yelling at unsatisfied customers and pocketing employees' tips.

Bouzaglo says the decision to sell has nothing to do with lingering publicity from the show.

She says they also had issues with the building's former landlord.

Sammy did say "I'm the gangster, not you" to Ramsey. You have to wonder what he was referring to. Was it just some tough trash talk, was he referring to a prior occupation, or something he was up to currently?
