Outstanding Movie, Casting, Filming etc.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. That's why I'm here on the IMDb website. I was SHOCKED, to see the low rating. I absolutely disagree. I gave it a 9. I see 16% of other people did, too. There are not many movies I would watch twice, but this is one.
The notion was simple: Young man with limited means wins lottery ticket, and it changes his life, ultimately for the good of people with the same predicament.

But they made it entertaining, and yet, put true-to-life elements in it. It was believeable that people would do exactly what was shown in the movie.

The purpose of movies is to entertain, but if you could sneak a subtle message through without distracting the audience, then you've accomplished two things, and it did just that.

There were some corny parts, like the pastor part, but it was woven into the rest of the story quite well when Lorenzo came in.

I am Black. I'm not going to call anybody racist if they didn't like the movie. I think it depends on your culture. There are some movies that will appeal to all audiences, and some to only certain audiences. Example: I hated Wayne's World. I tried twice to watch it, and couldn't. It was stupid and silly to me. Yet it got rave reviews. Yet, I loved There's Something About Mary. I hated Booty Call. I hate the title. I tried to watch the movie (because my friends wanted to watch it, and I couldn't.) So chill, people. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. We're all human beings, but we don't all think alike. That's a fact.

I gave this movie a 5. I wouldn't say it was outstanding but it was watchable. In my opinion they should have just focused the story on Bow Wow's love interests and his relationship with his best friend. It really didn't need Ice-T, Lorenzo and Sweet Tee storylines.

oldahus I agree I just watched it and it was so hilarious and the acting was so good, I am thinking of paying pay per view to watch it again. I thought it was great and I liked the community element of it - I think that is Ice Cube's way of giving back because he made it so that a lot of the scenes required a lot of extras. Which means a lot of people got a chance to be paid and learn at the same time.

It wasn't an outstanding movie, although it is entertaining if you like these kind of films. I have given it a 6, with some remarks:

Dreamac,
Let me start off by saying, clever blog, I like it. The set up is nice. I enjoyed reading your review. But....

When I watch a movie, I am evaluating more than just the plot and entertainment value. I notice the appropriateness of the chosen cast for their respective parts; the quality of the acting; the realisticness (is that a word?) of the setting;
AND....

The work of the cameraman/woman. (Did you see that upside down move he/she did when Bow Wow was running from Lorenzo - that was cool). The pacing of the movie. (i.e., it didn't drag, it keep me constantly interested) The driving points/ anticipation. (that quality that keeps you watching from one scene to the next til the end.) The presence of elements of story structure that people just like to see (main character faced with a dilemna, seeks to solve it, solves it (himself), and is changed in some way).

AND...

It had a bit of violence (it was done well, and Lorenzo's actor did a great job)
It had a bit of romance (I thought it was done nicely.)
It had some good humor (some of it you have to read into, such as when Keith David invited him with no choice into the car - flashing all of his teeth; or when Bill Bellamy sang "ooh yeah" after making a remark) I didn't like the pastor part.

So, okay, maybe not outstanding. I got carried away because I really did enjoy the movie. Maybe 'excellent' is a better description. My idea of an outstanding comedy is something like Trading Places with Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd. It had people walking away laughing and quoting lines.

Nice feedback and some very good tips, which I will definitely look at when I'm writing other reviews. It also depends on my mood how much I will write about a movie and which things I focus on. Usefull tips! Thanks.

My opinion about the movies i watch:

I'm not shocked at the low ratings because pretty much any film with a black cast gets a low rating on this particular site, even before the movie is out; quite disgusting really.

Anyway, I saw it on DVD today and liked it. It was indeed well done, but it also strayed a bit off on parts. It seems like there was a connection that concluded in the end, but the lack of focus on some of the characters was a bit disappointing.

The community aspect was just well done, it was literally a community, people outside talking, kids playing, jokes, everyone knows one another. It wasn't a terrible neighborhood but there were problems obviously.

I think it actually could have been a bit longer, and expanded on the relationship with his friend and Stacy. hmm I think a 6 or 7 is pretty decent rating.
