Are there any good black films that don't have Spike Lee Directing...?

I mean honestly it seems the only way "Black Film" retains any value is through over-utilizing black stereotypes. During the 70s Blaxploitation had a place, I think its time for this tired minority genre to step out of the film industry and step out of the entertainment industry in general.
Spike Lee was just a diamond in the rough I suppose, he unfortunately spawned hack directors like this guy and Tyler Perry, a sad day for the ethnicity indeed.

Gotta agree with ya. Films targeted toward the "brothas," are some of the the worst movies; just don't appeal to me. I've never seen a Spike Lee film. Just his production company's name pisses me off: 40 acres and a mule.

But I digress. There are black directors that do expand their stories beyond crap like Lottery Ticket, or just about every Ice Cube movie out there. Examples: John Singleton, The Hughes Brothers, Antoine Fuqua. Focus on those directors. To hell with Tyler perry. Dude's a hack who knows his target audience, and knows that that audience will watch the crap he makes.

If you want the absolute best black comedy you will ever see in your life, you have to watch Black Dynamite. It's on instant play on Netflix.

Really? I found it equally as terrible as any other black genre film. It relies on cheap laughs and lame scenarios. Its time for the "brothas" and "sistas" to retire from cinema

"Soul Food" was a good movie.

"Waiting to Exhale" was decent.

"Boomerang" was pretty good.

I would agree with you. But how many good movies has hollywood released in the past decade? I hate to quote chris rock but he's right....when we are allowed to make terrible movies like white people, then we can claim real progress. :D

a number of good points have been raised here. white people do make bad movies, as do asians ect. ect. but it seems like most ''bloack movies'' that come out are targeted for the ''black'' (?) audience, and only reinforce sterotypes that people have been fighting against.

this movie looks horrendous. i hope it bombs at the box office. why is it being released at the cinema???? this is stright to dvd garbage, tuesday night rental..thats it!

im fed up of movies like this getting a mass release while excellent films that deserve the recognition get the can.

I think you are judging "black" movies too harshly or taking them too seriously. At times I like to see a movie with a majority black cast for a change. No I don't like the movies about gangs or drugs,but I don't like "white" movies about gangs or drugs. That is my preference. I like a good laugh every once in a while, there is nothing wrong about laughing at stereotypes.

This post makes me really sad. It does seem that Hollywood tends to make "black films" that re-enforce the stereotypes that they fight against. Which kind of got me thinking about any particular non-white movie, and they do the same there as well. One of the many reasons why independent and foreign movies are getting more and more popular here in the states.

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good black movies out there, but it really sucks that you have to go out of your way to find them.
