The women cast in the show were terrible outside of Gretchen Mol..
Jimmy's mom was great.
But Lucy, Margaret, and Jimmy's wife were terribly annoying actresses. They really detracted from the quality of the show.

I'd feel like I could take you more seriously if you knew the characters' names. If you weren't paying enough attention, how can you have a valid opinion?

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.
Seriously????
shareYou've already posted about your admiration of the show's incestuous story line involving Jimmy and his mommie, so your post kinda makes sense.
And all of the women are fine on this show. Different characters with different personalities, all played out just perfect. And that goes for Jimmy's mommie too.
"A little Consideration, a little Thought for Others, makes all the difference." Eeyore
Lucy was horrible. Her nagging voice was like nails on a chalkboard. I was hoping she died in childbirth when they showed that episode. She sounded like a junkie thru the whole series.
shareIn an otherwise excellent cast I did find two to be problematic.
Paz de la Huerta I almost felt they were satisfied with because she was willing to take her clothes off on multiple occasions, because her manners seemed more like a late sixties early seventies druggie than of someone who would plausibly exist in that time period. And of course she did not survive the second season.
Aleksa Palladino's performance as Angela Darmody was also extremely problematic to my mind, but here I am less sure whether that was Ms. Palladino's fault, or whether the character of Angela as written was more the issue for me. I didn't find her performance the least bit convincing, going back and forth between the wife and her lesbian inclinations seemed to have several issues. And she also did not survive the second season. Interesting that she has done very little work since BE.
But I don't get the dislike here by some for Kelly Macdonald, who imo is an excellent actress. I think some confuse the way the character of Margaret was written with the performance.
Having said that I can agree that Gretchen Mol is an excellent actress, and would not argue against anyone saying she was the best female performer in BE. I just think there was not much distance in quality between her and Ms. Macdonald.

Didn't Jimmy once talk to someone about his wife being bisexual?
Perhaps Lucy was a bit overdone in ways but I think most of it was to the point. She was bitter, a whore, and a lost soul.
To the original poster: The women cast in this series were all excellent choices and the acting was excellent as well. Nothing is perfect. I can't think of any of the acting were I thought it was disappointing. I do think you are crazy to think the way you do about the female casting and acting
Van Alden's wife was boring at times,I felt sorry for her when she found out that he cheated,Gillian is just sleazy,And two faced,
Lucy is just Annoying,
They played the roles well
Paz De la Huerta is hot though. Rawwr!

I think that was an issue with the lighting and costumes. But she did get rougher looking as the seasons went on. Meg Steedle (Billie Kent) was pretty cute and not such a bad actress.
shareWhen I first watched the series I felt the same but maybe because I was always so disappointed if whole episodes went by without Chalky, Luciano, Capone and had Margaret nagging about the women doctor bits.
During my rewatching lately (the whole season in couple of days) I felt the women were much less annoying as I remembered.
That was real? I saw that movie, I thought it was bullsh*t
Margret was educating not "nagging."
She was a pioneer in puritan times, and she was clever and calm about getting her way, and in this case it was for the greater good. You might think all women "nag" about anything that doesn't serve you any purpose? such as a women's clinic.
Almost everyone here is unlikable, the only ones I liked were Jimmy, Richard, and Chalky. Margaret was OK sometimes, she's like Carmela, sometimes unlikeable but compared to most, tolerable.
