How was Van Alden

going to present/explain his baby to his wife?

reply

He found it abandoned in a basket, like how such babies were supposed to be left on the doorsteps of orphanages?

Presumably, though, he wasn't thinking that far ahead or was hoping his wife would be so overjoyed at finally having a kid that she wouldn't pry too closely.

When darkness overcomes the heart, Lil' Slugger appears...

I always thought he should have told her immediately as a 'hey this girl was involved with the degenerates I am after, now she is in trouble and desperately needs a good, Christian home for her baby'. Lucy would have played along as long as she thought she was getting paid and he could have found a way to keep her from telling his wife the truth. If nothing else she may have done it to have a place to live and if Rose had been there taking care of her she would not have been so isolated. I think he could have actually gotten away with that. Honestly, I think he was unconsciously looking to get Rose to leave him. She was unhappy, he could not make her happy, but he would never have left her.
