Is that actually his Mom or is it more like she adopted him? cause she seemed quite young.

I just started watching this on Amazon and i'm barely on episode 2. I thought that was his mistress or something and when he called her "Ma" I assumed that was just slang for babe, baby, or honey but then she started talking about his "father"

Also, how were none of the other showgirls thrown off by that? I know it's set in the early 1900's but I'm sure, even then, incest was frowned upon.

It WASN'T frowned upon? Is that a mistake of do you think they were cool with it?

And the showgirls thrown off by what? Jimmy talking to his mom while she's dressed as a showgirl? Why would that bother them? They probably aren't super uptight, conservative folk that a fellow employee has a son.

If you watched earlier films, parents and children in the west often kissed on the lips. Back then, kissing was a sign of affection and love but not necessarily lustful. 2nd, these are showgirls, dressed skimpily, who knows, some are prostitutes, they do not have the same mores us common folks have.

But her jumping on him with her legs around his waist is definitely an indicator. I guess you've found out by now, it's been 8 years.

I had a similar reaction to you when I first watched this, but I think they did that purposefully to make people go, "whoa, that's his mom?" lol. She's young because she had Jimmy when she was 13 years old. You'll find out how that unfolded later.

Jimmy grew up around those showgirls so they had to be used to it.

Jimmy and Gillian had sex one time; both were very drunk and Gillian was the instigator. Gillian truly believed there was nothing wrong with it but the shame Jimmy felt is what made him leave school and enlist.

It basically made him not care if he lived or died and went to the war to die. However, he came back alive and went on the self destructive path at home.
