I smiled when the two subplot characters started speaking Elvish and that was it. How can a high concept big screen comedy turn out to be so unfunny?

I think you may have had too high an expectation, perhaps?

It's hardly a high concept. It's been done multiple times before.

I just watched it on Netflix and it was fine for what it was, a couple of hours to park my brain. I enjoyed it for that. I gave it a 6.

Probably. Could you imagine going to see a film he or she had written. Lots of oooh vicar my trousers have fallen down.
