In a quite clever way WB has upped the performance for JL by upping the number of screens and the Box Office got a huge boost in domestic numbers. Screens expanded from 151 to 244 with an average of 130% increase over day-to-day returns.
Nice maneuver. There is still life in JL after all.
They get money and they maintain something more, Relevancy which is a currency that WB/DC very much needs to exploit to their benefit.
The Intellectual Property of JL is damaged and one way to fight back is to keep themselves highly visible. No doubt WB/DC had a marketing plan in place based on JL succeeding that may have been scuttled. I'm pretty sure they thought JL would have had long and strong legs.
The upcoming 10th Anniversary of the Dark Knight Returns will be acknowledged with a limited release in theaters and the only DCEU movie on their release slate for 2018 I think is Jason Mamoa's Aquaman. Other than that Marvel/Disney owns all of 2018 with some pretty high profile releases.

While I agree with the first part, you do realize how warped this logic is, right?
It's like saying "everyone in high school told me I cannot sing. The only way to fight this is not to take singing lessons, but to go on American Idol."
The movie they are keeping out there is the reason the brand was damaged to begin with!

No News is NOT Good News. Even if the product is perceived to be "Bad" keeping it in the public's view slowly turns the tide in favor of the product. I'm not talking about so bad it's good either. William Hung was a train wreck but stayed relevant for similar reasons, visibility and novelty.
Not a fan of this type of Guerilla Marketing but it works.
