ICYMI, On this day in History 01/21/2018

Without getting into a long drawn out analysis these two figures in comparison show just why Marvel/Disney and DC/Warner can not afford to be in a running competition with each other.

Weekend performance Jan 19-21:

Thor:Ragnarok: $234,516 Week 12
Justice League: $126,109 Week 10

For domestic box offices and even with all of the films that were released since 11/17/2017 these two films basically cannibalized each other. A larger domestic audience would have turned out for JL if T:R was not running in theaters and T:R would have maintained a much stronger hold if J:L hadn't been released so close to Thor.

As a stand-alone or one-off movie that Justice League has become even though it was not created to be that way, JL isn't a bad movie. T:R wasn't a must see event movie but J:L was intended to be and wasn't. The premature manipulation of bringing DC's Holy Trinity together in BvS along with piling on the Death of Superman before J:L was a tactical mistake by Warner.

I still can't figure out why J:L is performing so poorly (in respect to T:R) by lagging behind almost 2:1 at this point in favor of T:R. It makes no sense that WW fans aren't falling in line to see Gal Gadot reprise her role. or why don't Flash Fans and Jason Mamoa fans plunk their dollars down to see JL? Can the internets explain this to me?

"JL isn't a bad movie. "

It's pretty atrocious, dude.

As stated above. Although T:R is forgettable - to say the least - at least it's a fun 1 time watch. JL not only tries too hard it falls flat on it's CGI upper lip. I hear Superman's mustache stills cries late at night.

For me many of the problems for Justice League have to do with the attempt at staying close to a DCEU or DCU that was started with Man of Steel and BvS as well as trying to move forward. Without those two movies Justice League as a one-off isn't a bad movie. JL becomes an atrocious movie as you become stuck with characters that are unlikeable (Supes and Bats) with only Superman being more true to himself in THIS film.

Yes to each his own. The paltry BO numbers mean that someone went to see the movie and the 70% rottentomatoes audience score means that even deluded multiple voting Fans found some enjoyment with the film.

Not trying to change the minds of anyone just trying to figure out the small boxoffice. I know full well that front-loaded films predict the footprint and coat-tail for a movie. JL had a weak opening, poor reviews and momentum but one would think that the DC fan base was much bigger.

Methinks the DC fan base has been overly exaggerated in size. For me that is astounding. They also seem to lack passion and loyalty for their own characters and prefer to just complain about everything else rather than support Warner/DC products.

Even from the beginning, it would have made so much more sense to add the mustache to footage where he had a shaven face. It's a good look, it would be far easier and more realistic to add the hair, it would make sense in context, and from what I understand, it would be easier since I have heard that most of his scenes were reshoots and thus required the removal.

There really isn't any point to rehashing hair or no hair for Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman.

Frankly Mustache-Gate barely registered as an issue for me and I had to actually LOOK really hard to see the bad CGI. It never took me out of the movie and the grainy cell-phone image made it seem natural. Supes aloofness and detachment were a bigger problem in that scene more than anything else.

I still can't figure out why DC fans refused to show up. Streaming? Pirated copies? They don't exist?

reply

A high definition copy did leak in December, but the movie was already bombing at that point.
