Warner Bros.-DC’s “Justice League” dominated the international box office in its opening weekend with $185.5 million at approximately 47,000 screens in 65 markets, led by $51.7 million in China.
The costly superhero tentpole is ahead of the international opening weekends for Warner’s “Wonder Woman” and Disney-Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok.”
Ha, ha ha.... Which one of you two is more stupid. Thor: Ragnarok opened in 32 markets, while Justice bore League just oppened in 65 markets. So, JL opened in twice the markets but couldn't make twice of what Thor did.
Thor 3 - 109M openning in 32 Markets
JL. - 185M openning in 65 Markets
Anyone who has attended elementary school can see Thor did better per market...
Those are pretty thin straws you're grasping at and maybe you should go back to school where someone can teach you that 185 is MORE THAN 109. I'm not a Marvel hater by the way.
Yes if I have 50 dollars in one pocket and someone else has 100 dollars stuffed into three pockets he still has more money than me. I can cheer myself up with a higher per pocket ratio but I'm really just kidding myself.
But if he started the job one day earlier to earn that 100 dollars, should he be dancing, or take into account the second person (with $50) started the same job a day after him and, thus, have less money?
If you don't want to compare like-for-like, then that means Marvel is the greatest reviewed cinematic universe ever, that has earned 4x what DCEU has.
Obviously you have to take into account the number of films, who started first, etc. That's why that user mentioned the number of markets. You don't just ignore it like that. WB chose to go for a simultaneous worldwide release (same for BvS), so obviously whoever does that has an advantage in opening numbers.
I'm not trying to refuse WB/DC success here, but to not take into account markets and not compare like-for-like, you are making it sound like WB has absolutely nothing to worry about. They have a LOT to worry about now. Is Ben Affleck staying? Will Martin Scorsese still do that Joker film he was talking about? Will Shazam even be made? Will Aquaman/Cyborg have a sequel, and will Flash even get a solo film? Gotham City Sirens....cancelled now? The most hardcore DCEU fans have absolutely no idea...they know as much as a Marvel fan when it comes to the stability of these future projects.
JL underperforming in the biggest market in the world should be sounding alarms. You can't shrug this off.
Now, it could be possible Thanksgiving traveling may have put a bit of a dent in JL's domestic BO. So we'll see how things go for the second weekend. But I'm not writing this off as a smash success for WB either, where Snyder should be awarded all the DCEU films he wants.
It is a meaningless statement since Thor's totals did not include as many markets including China which Thor outperformed JL in.
But using your way of looking at it: Thor 3 has outperformed JL internationally earning 2.6 times what Justice League earned after the latter film opened below BvS. All this is true, but it doesn't make the comparison honest.
This is actually an incorrect analogy. If I ask 100 people for 1 dollar each and get 65 and you go to 200 people and ask for a dollar each and get 75 dollars....you have more money, but I was more successful.
You don’t really get how maths work do you? If Thor made 109 in 32 markets, then it will make more when it opens in the other 33 markets it hasn’t yet. See how that works? Don’t know what the fuck you’re taking about pockets for. Pockets aren’t revenue streams.
But who gives a fuck? A good box office doesn’t mean it’s a good film. How much have those shitty twilight movies made?
You're comparing apples and oranges; Thor 3 didn't open in at as many territories as Justice League and wouldn't be expected to make as much total money for that weekend as a result. For instance, Thor 3 hadn't opened in China for the first weekend, while Justice League has as you pointed out.
You'd have to take a look at the opening weekend numbers for each country and add them together for each movie to get a more fair comparison. Looking at BoxOfficeMojo's numbers, each of the 51 territories opening weekends that are recorded for Thor actually have combined total of over 200 million, but that's by my count so feel free to add up the numbers yourself. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=intl&view=bycountry&id=marvel2017.htm
Seems to me that given this more apt comparison, Justice League is actually tracking behind Thor thus far..
Yeah just adding China alone closes most of the gap since it earned more than JL. Thor 3 would have literally had to have bombed in the remaining markets to finish behind JL.
Yes it opened in the largest international market and twice as many markets as Thor 3 to open to less than BvS did a film that finished behind what WB was hoping for. For the moment we can pretend Thor 3 and Justice League are comparable films in expectations, they clearly are not but lets pretend they are.
For a legitimate comparison lets add China's Thor 3 opening which was 55 mil to its original opening weekend and what do you get? 164 mil gross from international opening weekends. So a difference of 21 mil between the two films. Do you really think the last 31 markets are going to average less than a million per market? I mean..lets be serious...even if those other markets under performed Thor 3 would probably still outgross JL in the same amount of markets. I appreciate that you may want the film to succeed, but it opening less than BvS was not good, not as bad as it was in the US but it still was not good.
And the fact Thor 3 is even close to Justice League kind of says a lot.
Justice League should be on its way to $1.2-$1.5 billion or more (it won't make it at this pace). That's going by The Avengers/Age of Ultron totals.
Thor: Ragnarok is a follow up to a rather disastrous sequel (imo) and a mildly entertaining but slightly weak Thor 1. For Thor 3 to be so close to JL says a lot for both Marvel and DC right now. Basically, Marvel knows how to course correct better, while DC can't even get the basics down. JL should be clearing $1 billion no problem, but it's likely going to fall short.
So, wait....you're saying that the opening of THE DC super team in their premiere outing, introducing Aquaman, Cyborg and Flash properly and resurrecting Superman....opening in twice as many markets as the THIRD Thor ( the weakest performing of the Marvel solo Avengers) and making a somewhat more is a good thing? Given the number of moments, the iconic characters and the concept....this should've BURIED the competition, shouldn't it?
If I work a 50 hour week for $500 and you work 40 hours a week for $450 dollars I've earned more money than you. Yes your hourly rate is higher but 500 is more than 450. I hope that helps.
