how did they get down there?

i havent read the books but i actually really enjoyed the film, in large part thanks to the shining performance given by saoirse ronan. one big question i was left with at the end (aside from why the human race retreated underground...and why this was never really broached in the film) was how in the hell did the 'builders' get down to ember...we saw the children using the escape route, but how did they navigate groups of people down there to begin with? how did they all go up these cascading waterfalls with the machinary required to build a city underground? or is that something i should have just put to suspension of disbelief?

In the book while they're making the escape on the river, they find a book that is a journal/diary. Somebody who originally went down to the Ember, wrote a journal/diary that explained they used motorboats to take the new citizens to Ember. About how the machinery got down there to build the city, they find out how it got down there in the 4th one ''Diamond of Darkhold''.
