WHY ONE DAMN BOX!!!?

50 years of planning...
Millions spent... hundreds of people involved to create the city...
A book very well thought out on behalf of the author, but then, when the time comes to execute to plan...
They give the city ONE DAMN BOX?
Why not leave several boxes as a redundancy? Say about 3.
That way if one is lost or there is an issue with the locking mechanism, they are covered.
It seems implausible that the builders would not think of that.

And why only mayor would know about this box? It's for the benefit of the entire community. Stupid plot device.

In Asimov's Foundation Series, the time capsule had a much more logical "lock box." in that the entire community knew about time capsule, such that it was the center of their community, nearly a religion, and entire community waited for it to open and make predictions ever couple of decades.

Anyway, I'm reading the book. It's a pretty bad story. The main characters are annoying bratty teenagers. The girl is clearly a Mary Sue. Definitely not raw material to make a decent, memorable movie with realistic characters.

Maybe if I was a 12 year old girl, like the protagonist, I would be all "you go grrl!". As I'm not, I find her gratingly annoying, and hope bad things will happen to her.

bcc81475-2, you're absolutely right, and I thank you for the loud laugh I just enjoyed.

I haven't yet gotten a copy of the book, but I'm in the middle of watching the film again, and here's another question with exclamation points:

In the plaza, presumably, everyone who isn't too old, or too young, or too pregnant, or whatever - everyone who can joins the Happy Song Fest Day. But there are so few people! There can't possibly be more than 200 people there.

Anyone else see the breeding scenario problems?

I'm very fond of this film and its actors. But I'm not an idiot either. Hey, did you enter your comment in the Goofs section?

Cheers,
Fiona

I turned it on in the middle of the film. Was lost but would like to see it from the top just to fill in the plot holes.

To keep it a secret. The Builders wanted the citizens to live in peace for 200 years until they thought it would be safe to go outside. It wasn't a zombie apocalypse as in the 2nd and 4th book(3rd is a prequel), they show a town on the surface.

The story is rather simple, too simple but great if you apply the suspension of disbelief practice.

The city started with 100 people, 50/50 in gender which biologically wouldn't work. Nature always creates more females. Half of them are senior citizens meant to get the kids to puberty and then die. They eat canned goods that are somewhere around 230 years old which would have killed them off anyway. The amount of supplies in food, light bulbs, etc, would be impossible to store for over 200 years worth of provisions, maintaining electrical and plumbing systems without knowledge of either and that after 230ish years of breeding they only have 432 people leave the city with maybe another 100 at most die on the way out ... yeah none of it is plausible.

But if you ignore the plotholes the idea is great. The four novels are amazing and the movie is fun as a stand alone piece with a beautiful score. It has a The Thief Lord feel to it.
