The mayor's 'ship came in'.

..........The message Lena delivered to the mayor, from one of his henchmen, was "his ship had come in". It is a common figure of speech but the Mayor had a large stash of can goods. Did he have someone on the outside who was finding canned food, as well as fruit and vegetables and literally bringing them in by boat or were other survivors on the surface. At the End he was planing to escape to some place.

The line was "Your ship, is in"
Which probably meant, your shipment of food/drink from the stores, has been delivered.

I actually took it to possibly mean that he knew about the box and its contents, otherwise he wouldnt have had a part of the key, or that he suspected at least that there was a way out and that Looper had set it all up. That probably isnt the case, but thats what came into my mind when I first saw the movie.

No he didnt know anything about the box or even the fact that he was below the ground. He was just being a greedy bastard and using his power as a mayor to stash the goodies for himself.

Had he known he would have led the people out thus being the hero of Ember. He even uses his card to pick his teeth. Thats not something youd do if thats the item that will save everyone.

I'm surprised they even had the word 'ship' any more, as they didn't know about oceans or lakes and weren't allowed to travel on the river...

Shakespeare quotes are much older and still commonplace today.

And it's worth adding (to make it more specifically relevant to the "ship" thing) that there are old phrases in use today which people will use despite not knowing the meaning of specific words in the phrase.
