I was waiting for a long time for this to appear on premium cable, and was also surprised when it first appeared on FX. Honestly, there does not appear to be any rhyme or reason to when films get released on DVD and when they appear on PPV or premium channels.
I can only guess that since this film won a few Oscars, it was kept off of cable for a longer time in order to make more money in DVD sales (as soon as a film appears on HBO or Showtime, the DVD sales drop off). Maybe they kept it off cable a bit TOO long. Or maybe it went to iTunes/Amazon and skipped premium cable altogether.
FX Channel might also have placed a high bid because they also air sports like Ultimate Fighting, and they thought this would fit right in. I watched this on FX right after "Rocky Balboa" and there were a ton of commercials for UFC during the broadcast.
So I think it's part of the FX marketing plan to attract male viewers (boxing fans).
