Everyone in this movie is so stupid except for Charlene

Ugh, watched this movie last night for the first time since I saw it in theaters. It was so frustrating to watch with how dumb everyone was! The mother, especially the sisters (biggest pieces of white trash) and even Micky for not taking that trainer/promoters offer to train year round and get as far away as possible from that anchor of a brother and leech of a mother!

And then Micky running out of the restaurant to "help" Dicky who was already beyond the point of saving, surrounded by at least 5 cops and throwing himself into the melee. What was his exact plan?? Especially when Charlene, the Dad, the Sgt./trainer told him to stay put and not get involved. Then basically runs out of the place with Amy holding on and basically dragging her half way across the room. LOL

Thank god for Mick that his girl actually had the brains and courage to help him see the light and realize his family was holding him back and essentially ruining his career. How could he not see that when they forced him into that death match against... "or else nobody would get paid"...

And then you have the ex-wife having their daughter who couldn't have been even 10 years old watch the documentary thus exposing her to hardcore drug use?? WTF???

And speaking of the documentary... I could not believe my ears when the clueless Mom goes to Mick "you think they set him up?". That was the breaking point for me I could not handle the stupidity.

Hey Mick WE got a good business offer, they're gonna pay US x amount of dollars, etc.

I mean you pretty much answered your own questions!! As a man (in Mickey) he was one of those family guys who no matter what they came first. He knew that Dickey was a mess and drug addict but it was his brother and family doesn't give up on each other.
Yea sure his mother was nutty also who made Mickey follow down the wrong path and couldn't except her sons drug addiction. She was stuck in time with the Dickey of old and thought the HBO special was on DICKEYS comeback when it was one on drug addiction.
I remember watching Mickey fight on HBO and he could have been a special fighter if not for his loyalty to his family in his early years. Before being offered again to go train professionally he followed his family into the road to nowhere where his mom and Dickey really had the motivation to make money for themselves and Mick took the beatings. So the answer really is that Mickey was surrounded by nit wits and white trash who had nothing in mind but to make money off their own family member and finally Amy Adams character helped him see the light and Mickey also figured out his family only had malicious intentions for him but way to late in his career. Sometimes your family isn't the right people to listen to and will ruin and guilt trip you to stay with them (being the total wron fit) when going with the right people can take your career (mainly boxing) into a real career instead of a punching bag. Excellent film with performances for the ages from a bale and also a film (as most Russel films) with a great message. The film isn't dumb which I don't think your trying to say but yes, the family for the most part em were a bunch of white trash fools with intentions they may have thought (in their screwed up and drugged up minds) that they were helping but really were toxic and it took to long for Mick to realize.. FANTASTIC FILM !!!

THERE'S NO ROOM IN MY CIRCUS TENT FOR YOU !!!!

I wonder if that's how it occurred in real life.

Because how the movie portraits Charlene is a *beep* angel in Mickeys life.
