Putting hand in a bucket of rice

Can anyone explain the significance of why someone would put their hand in a bucket of raw rice?

The hand is plunged in a few times, moved around in a circular fashion and then withdrawn letting the rice run off the hand.

I've only just watched the scene and somehow I doubt that it will be explained in the movie (as he's not there with his girlfriend).

I would guess it's somehow supposed to help with the healing or strengthening of the hand/wrist.

Thanks in advance.

It's the scene where Mark Walberg's character is going back into training after he's had his hand broken. It's just over an hour into the movie.

I know Hall of Famer Steve Carlton used to do it as part of his regular training routine, and cited it as one of the reasons why his left (pitching) arm was so strong.

Steve Carlton used to do it

ditto Roger Clemens-- a bucket of rice
Does anyone remember that commercial?
But of course years later we knew that 'roids were a significant contributing factor beyond the rice.

Not only that but u could put ure smartphone in the rice after it falls in the toilet. So it's not a total waste you could then eat the rice.

This video explains nothing. It says it makes the hand stronger. Great, and drinking water will make you live forever, just because!

In what way does it make the hand stronger and what does the rice do to actually strengthen the hand?

reply

It's to prevent over sweating of the hand :)

it is used to strengthen the hand. It was broken and now it needs to be toughen up
The Rice is a tough but soft substance like sand. Putting your hand in it keeps it stronger.

I used to work in the gym at a physical therapy/rehabilitation office and the rice bucket was used quite a lot. It was actually a pretty effective strengthening technique for people with hand injuries. If are ever looking to work on your grip you should check it out.
