That Scene Question

SPOILERS!

I've been wondering this for a while and can't find an answer anywhere, so I figured this would be the best place to find answers. In the amputation scene, Mathias is screaming bloody murder, but Jeff tries to convince everyone that it's just the sight and thought of his legs being brutally cut off that's making him scream. Now, Mathias is pretty darn convincing, so my question is this: does he really not feel a thing, because we know Jeff conducted simple tests to confirm that Mathias is paralyzed from the waist down. Is this scene, horror elements aside, realistic in that sense?

I'll tell you one thing, if Jeff was right and Mathias really was just screaming over the sight of his mangled legs, I will feel a whole lot better watching that scene in the future.

I'm pretty sure he felt pain. My take on it was Jeff was either wrong and misjudged his test but by the time he had started cutting it was too late to stop. Or he knew Mathias would feel the pain but needed to convince the others that he would not feel pain as they were all against the amputation. I could be wrong since it's been a while since I watched this movie.
