My question would be why weren't the Mayans panicking more about that lump of vine on their side of the no man's land? Did they burn it? Throw it back? (not likely since they would kill whoever touched it) Did it crawl back on it's own volition back to the hill?
That scene was for us to explain viewers and characters that its vines that native are afraid of. Otherwise no one would know why natives were acting like that.
Movie made no sense because natives would just kill everyone like they did with greek guy. They didnt hesitate to murder even their own child. There was no reason for them to let those americans on the pyramid and wait for them to find a way to run a way. They would kill them all.
But movie need to happen so they let them go. Same with boy. They need to show that vines are the problem.
