Can someone please explain any possible appeal to me? The lyrics are terrible, the vocals themselves are nothing special. The plot is awful and in no way creative. People's obsession with this has bothered me since the day I saw this. Easily the worst thing Bousman ever has been, or probably will be, involved in.
The problem is that all of your complaints are too subjective and opinion based. Ex. I liked the lyrics (for the most part) and thought the vocals were all-in-all great (I've never seen a musical with perfect vocals, there are always a few sore thumbs), and while basic, the plot was solid, and the visual design was quite creative. It's just your own opinion... You're probably not going to change your mind, and fans won't change theirs.
And FURTHERMORE, this is my signature! SERIOUSLY! Did you think I was still talking about my point?
Fully agree with everything MaximusMadness stated. I personally love the lyrics! Most people fail to see that this is an Opera which have lyrics replacing the dialogue. I cant think of any other Rock Operas other than Tommy by The Who, Which also in its own way was excellent. As for the plot. It's original, It's Dark, It's Unique!
I've been in love with this for years. Like others said, its in the eye of the beholder. I am a musical and horror movie junkie so this film/play is like a goldmine to me. I am even getting the Repo Man tattooed on my back.
It is not a typical musical and not for everyone, just like how some people love The Rocky Horror Picture Show and others can't stand it. (I personally love that too!)
The lyrics suit the characters and the plot perfectly, they do the job of describing what needs to be said and done which is how a musical/opera works.
I think people complain this isn't original because for some reason they think its copying Repo Men but Repo! The Genetic Opera came out years before Repo Men.
Nothing anyone says is going to change what I like and vise versa. You don't like it, then don't watch it and be quiet.
I'm the monster! I'm the villain! What perfection! What precision!
Although I drank nearly an entire bottle of Absinth while watching the movie, I am quite sure I would have given it 10 stars had I been sober. I involuntarily had to think of the rocky horror picture show while watching it as well. They both combine a rather simple plot and classical structure with contemporary music and stage design to reach an extraordinary experience. If they had made the plot more complicated, the whole thing would have just become confusing and tedious to watch.
I was also rather surprised (though I shouldn't be) how good Paris Hiltons acting was. Why shouldn't I be surprised? If she had acted better in any of her previous films, it wouldn't have made a difference, since they were *beep* anyway. Actors are only as good as the productions they play in.
I also agree with MaximumMadness. To each his own. I fell in love with the movie as soon as I saw the trailer. It's an amazing cult-classic and sits on my shelf next to Rocky Horror. I'm sorry you're bothered by the Army; maybe you should avoid us and move on. The songs are brilliant and the cast was superb. I wish I could at least see the stage play version.
I couldn't agree with you more. This thing is trash in a major way. It's trying so hard to be 'cult' but it fails miserably - you can't just manufacture a cult film, it has to happen organically. This did not. It's such a wannabe Rocky Horror, it's really sad. Hopefully the whole thing will die out in a few years, specifically once Hot Topic goes out of business.
Its "cult" is manufactured, douchebag. It didn't develop organically - it was forced by the creators, therefor not a real cult movie, therefor your 'comment' is invalid.
Ignore Republicans; then you rob them of their lies having any influence. http://foxnewslies.net/
I'm really not sure how this film is a wannabe Rocky Horror. Because it's a musical? Because it's looked at by many as a cult film? Because honestly, there's nothing else that even remotely can be compared between the two.
'possible appeal to me? ' That is the problem, it does not appeal to you because its not your type of movie. The people that love this movie is because it appeals to them. Not all movies will appeal to everyone.
What is the point of asking someone to explain the appeal? If enough fans of the movie line up and say: "Repo! is fantastic, and here's why," are you going to reply: "I understand now! Thanks, I can see this movie why is fabulous." Can't you just accept it's not your cup of tea and move on without being a gigantic buzzkill?
@CW: Well then, I think THIS movie will be more suitable to your tastes. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1213644/ Repo! ROCKS! (pun intended). There will never be a movie more original than Repo! Props to Darren Lynn Bousman for bringing something completely new and different.
It's the kind of movie that is sure to polarize. Some people will end up loving it to bits, some people will end up hating it. If campy, ridiculous (and I mean that in the best way possible) and theatrical is your thing you're more likely to love it.
Personally, I couldn't watch the whole thing. I was lured in by the trailer and I thought it looked quite promising, and despite my intense dislike of musicals I decided to give it a go. But no, I still can't stand when people sing and dance the movie instead of traditionally acting it. That's not the movie's problem, that's just me not being in the target demographic by a long shot.
I liked the visuals and the story was silly but fun enough. My main gripe is that I saw precious few good actors that could actually sing and precious few numbers that weren't totally forgettable.. and the ones that weren't were of the annoying earworm variety. I'm no expert but I have a feeling this can either make or break a good opera.. at times the lyrics also felt like they could have been better if they had been made up on the fly by the cast of Whose Line is it Anyway ("the zydrate gun goes somewhere against your anatomy", seriously?). Brilliant? Not by a long shot. Has tons of potential as a guilty pleasure if you're inclined towards this sort of thing? Absolutely.
Anyway, that's just me and I'm glad that some folks can get a lot of enjoyment out of it. It would be a boring world if everybody liked the same thing.
... and now I can't get Zydrate Anatomy out of my head. Damn ye!
i think its camp, and its done well according to some and badly according to others. When you consider Gastric bypass surgery, and any number of procedures done by people, it isnt too far off. Organ markets are all over the black market now, and the film depicts it to an obviously ridiculous end.
Fairly good premise, but mix-match hit and miss cast. It was a nice attempt at something linked to Saw, yet not quite as inventive as it thinks. Musicals have REALLY struggled of late. Nine was a bomb, the recent Rock of Ages bombed and I cant even remember if the Cher-Christina Aguilera film registered any buzz.
