Happened to be at a lot of the locations in Istanbul this year

The underground (lake and pillar scene near the end) location is the Byszantine Citstern created by the Romans and it doesn't connect to the previous scene.

I was also at the Grand Bazaar where the badies flees through, plus a couple of other locations.

I was with 12 American students travelling at the time.

Yeah same here, where that german guy died in the movie I had lunch break lol. That was not the Aya Sofya although the movie suggested it. All of Istanbul's locations in the movie are the highlights of the city, so if you've been there once, you've probably been on all the movie sights.

Yeah, all those sights and then some :)

The cistern was in some scenes in "From Russia, with Love" the James Bond movie.

I found the cat-walks built on top of the roofs of apparently private dwellings to be interesting. Since they obviously connect very many properties, I wonder at their purpose. Fire-fighting? I don't think I'd be interested in having a community walkway on top of my roof.

I'll answer my own previous post here. Re. those scenes on the Istanbul rooftops with the catwalks. Those are the roofs of the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. They are not the roofs over residences, and residential neighborhoods do not have these catwalks. Purpose still unknown, but would enable someone to get around the bazaar area quickly without weaving through the various stalls, etc. Perhaps for security or firefighting as I originally suggested.
