Yes Conroy was very stupid to think he continue with his abusive ways as Victoria became older and more emotionally mature and stable. Apparently his pride didn't allow him to see that his influence was short lived and his cruel and heartless methods would not be forgotten by the young Queen. He's fortunate the Queen had some compassion, albeit not much, when it came what Conroy would do following her ascension to the throne. Then he had to deal with Prince Albert when it came to matters of fiscal duties that Conroy had to explain. Conroy knew he was spending money foolishly possibly for his own gain. Anyway Conroy was a stupid man who quietly disappeared into English history.
