Why did King William insults her mum?

There was a scenes in which the King verbally humiliates the duchess, why? Was it because he despises her or he knows of her regency plans?

Because the Duchess and Conroy had been manipulating and controlling Victoria since her birth. They attempted to coax a regency out of Victoria and the King thought with the Duchess being in charge, the royal house would suffer.

the king always disliked the twice married duchess & always thought of her as a freeloading gold digger. he was very angry that his niece was kept from his court & knew of the regency plans, which is why he hung on until victoria's 18th birthday so she can rightfully ascend to the throne without interference.

It was that they were keeping Victoria from court. Isolating and trying to get her to sign a regency order...AND the fact that they took 15 rooms in the palace when they came for the Kings birthday. He felt the Dutchess had no propriety and was greedy.

Victoria's mum and Sir John Conroy had conspired together to force Victoria to sign a Regency order, which meant that her mother (and hence Sir John) had control of the throne until Victoria turned 21 years old. She however wanted to ascend the throne after the death of the King when she was 18.

King William knew what was going on. He genuinely loved Victoria and thought she was appropriate to inherit the kingdom. He despised her mother but more than her, he despised Sir John.

The Duchess and Conroy had kept Victoria from the King as much as possible, to the point of defying his wishes. They kept her secluded and completely dependent on them, hoping to break her so they could control her. Fortunately she was a strong willed young woman.
