I just watched this film and love it even more, there are always new snippets I pick up. Emily/Miranda are some of my favourite actresses so I'm not biased ;) now this stage of royalty interests me, so I wonder if there are any decent biographies for me to read over Christmas?
We Two, by Gillian Gill. I could not put it down. Very unusual for a biography. Most of the time they read like textbooks. Loved it!!! Read it after seeing this film. Highest recommendation.
If you want a biography about a king or queen here are my sugesttions Catherine the great ( tv Movie with CZJ ) The Tudors (Tv series) The Other Boleyn Girl Elizabeth and Elizabeth the Golden Age both with Cate Blanchet The Kings Sppech
I just finished Gillian Gill's biography. It is highly entertaining, but flawed in some ways. The wealth of information is riveting and astounding, and the pacing is near-perfect. It gives you a real sense of the people and era. But she has a stumbling block that the vast majority of biographers have: a clear agenda. She is too quick to read twentieth-century psychology, and twenty first-century feminist ideology into events in the past. She is thoroughly unromantic, too cynical, and often her efforts to make Victoria and Albert human fail to make them real. She is unsympathetic, and too inclined to assume the worst. Is it refreshing to have these distant, dusty idols pulled off the pedestal? At times, but it is also relentless. I like facts and a bit of gossip in my history, and the book has plenty of that, but I don't like the taint of an author's bias.
Incidentally, Gillian Gill's book closely follows the time-frame and events of the BBC miniseries, "Victoria and Albert" (in a much less sentimental way) so if you liked that one, "We Two" may be a good fit for you. The first part also closely follows the plot of "The Young Victoria" (much less romantically).
I haven't read them, but I know there are two biographies out there, "Becoming Queen Victoria," and "The Young Victoria." Since this is "The Young Victoria" message board, those might be good choices.
I must have thought to myself when doing the original post I had time to read it, and have read consecutively since, but still haven't got hold of a copy. Maybe close to Christmas or some time in the new year I'll tackle it finally, thanks for your recommendation.
