how did the wheelers know cathy bates' family?

i've watched this movie several times and i like the scenes with "john" and that family interacting with the millers. the whole "it's the crazy guy who is extra perspective and speaks the truth the main characters won't"
but were they just old friends of one of their families? how did the wheelers know them? they didn't quite seem to enjoy their visits. how it seemed to me. but really, how did they know each other?

I'm watching it now. I'm pretty sure she was their realtor. She found the house for them. I think she's one of those busy buddies who knows everyone, and she makes a reference to finding the perfect people for the house in the end.
