I love this film and think both of their performances were amazing, that's why it features on my list! Check it out and I'd love to know what you think :)
Oh Shutter Island was definitely in there!! Catch Me If You Can is great but I definitely need to watch it again, his performance wasn't as fresh in my mind!! By this point though I don't care what Leo wins for, so long as he wins!
1. Wolf of Wall Street. At this point, the awards are a farce, if he doesn't win for this it will just be plain ludicrous. Perhaps his finest performance ever. Like Archer in BD, I can't see anyone else playing the role.
2. (Tie) Blood Diamond/The Departed - Total BS he didn't win for either of these. 06 should have been the year for DiCaprio and it's BS it wasn't. He should have been nominated for BOTH films and won for either one.
3. What's Eating Gilbert Grape - To actually make people believe you are mentally handicapped in real life was pretty astounding. Kind of reminds me about Michael C Hall's performance in Six Feet Under, to this day people still ask him if he's gay, he was THAT good.
4. Django Unchained - Yes, he was up against Christoph Waltz, but in all honesty, Leo should have won. Leo was COMPLETELY out of his comfort zone in this, and had much more material that hindered on his performance whether it would be a success or not.
5. Everything else. Seriously this list is fcking hard. So many films he deserved some kind of award for. Inception, Shutter Island, Catch Me If You Can, Basket Ball Diaries, Aviator (I didn't particularly love the film, but Leo was amazing), Marvin's Room, Revolutionary Road, Titanic, Gatsby(even if it's a shoddy film, he owned it and is now THE Gatsby to beat.)
He wasn't that great in the Departed but without doubt his greatest performance to date was in Gilbert Grape. Django and the Aviator are also up there. I haven't seen Wolf Of Wallstreet yet! but seen one scene and he seems pretty amazing!
Thanks for listing them out, I could not be bothered going to her blog.
Obviously with Gilbert Grape he went full retard, which was always going to make it difficult. Anyway, Ralph Fiennes should have won that year. Basketball Diaries I don't even remember anything about his character in that. He Got Game had better acting while we're on the subject. Aviator was sheer Oscar-bait much like the other nominees that year so it could have gone to anyone, I think Foxx was a good choice overall, at least he felt natural and didn't seem to be overacting. Blood Diamond - nah, inconsistent accent from DiCappuccino, I thought it was a parody at first. Revolutionary Road was just more Oscar-bait and Reo just huffed and puffed, balled his fists and screamed red-faced like he usually does so he would have had zero chance against the quality of Mickey Rourke and Sean Penn anyway.
I respect the guy and think he'd definitely going to win at one point but I'm sure even he'd tell you that he's never been robbed of an oscar. Each year he's been nominated he's lost fair and square to an outstanding performance i.e. jamie foxx in ray, McConaughey in Buyer's club etc. The only year he should definitely have won is the eyar he wasn't nominated and that was for Django
P.s. he was great in whats eating gilbert grape but ralph fiennes should have won
I like his performance in The Beach. His character in the script didn't leave much to work with but Leo made him very human. People criticise that performance, maybe because the character isn't that likeable at times, but it's a very real performance
What about, "This Boys Life" PEOPLE?! Amazing performance!
When he was arguing with April in this film, all I kept thinking and picturing was that he still makes the same face and sounds the same as he did fighting with De Niro in TBL! He will still have a baby face to me.
