The "Happy Birthday" Scene

When Kate was singing "Happy Birthday" to Frank, it was awful. It sounded like April had a speech disorder, which obviously was not the case. It was just Kate's English accent that got in the way. They should have redone the scene or deleted it because it was very obvious. I like the movie overall but this is a very little something that annoyed me. It may be petty of me but I just felt like pointing it out and wondering if anyone else caught it too.

I get what you are saying and think this is just one of things that keeps the big screen adaptation from working entirely. If you read the book you would know that the over-the-top and dramatic way that Frank and April talk and interact is intentional. It is part of who they are, especially April. Winslet nails it. Unfortunately, without reading the book and understanding that this is intentional they both look hammy and off their game. Re-watch and look at this - everyone else in the movie acts realistic and spot on. Frank and April perform as if they were stage actors, delivering their lines to each other and everyone else they interact with like they are in a staged play.
