Frank & April Are Not Supposed to Be Likeable

I see so many posts on this board complaining about Frank and April and I think they're missing the point. Frank and April aren't supposed to be likable characters. In fact, I think if we were able to like them we'd be able to justify a lot of their actions by saying "Well, if I were in his/her position... I can see how..." and it would completely distract from the purpose.

When you ARE able to relate to Frank and April, because of how hard it is to like them, it makes the viewer deliciously uncomfortable and that's one of the things I love about this movie. It really explores those desires that many of us have, but might suppress because it doesn't mesh with what society had planned. Some people fight it, some people give in because it's easier and are at least content, and some people give in but are miserable.
