What a depressing time to be alive
Very depressing.
shareBelieve me, everyone wasn't as unhappy as this couple in the 50's. I remember reading the author of the book based his books on his own experiences, so they must have been godawful.
shareYes, very depressing. It's more of a slice-of-life kind of film and it just so happens that the people inside of the home were miserable.
shareYes, but in certain ways, "its only a movie." From a novel with a depressing viewpoint as well.
I grew up in a suburban home and I remember things like going to football games and baseball games with one parent or both, watching TV with them, going to movies with them. There was a least a "feigned happiness" that this particular film refuses to acknowledge, what with its central troubled couple and the side characters of a family in which the adult son is a verbally vicious mental patient who has had 37 shock treatments and insults the couple at their most intimate level to their faces, even as his mother stands up for him, which makes her kind of nuts herself..
In short...its a depressing movie of a depressing novel and while it suggests the fact that having a job and/or doing housework can be hellish entrapments of life....hey, that's life, and in REAL life, people get these things done and find other ways to enjoy themselves.
