Am I the only one that LIKED this damned show?

I just finished watching and I enjoyed it. So there.

I enjoyed it.

There used to be a lot of other regulars on this board and things were pretty much split between people who liked it, people who didn't, and people who were kind of neutral.

Yes, but the people who liked it were people also now. The show's over, let's give everyone their opinions. :)

There are many who said that the only redeeming feature of the original movie was the wardrobe.

Plus, have you ever heard of movies like "Valley of the Dolls" or "Pink Flamingos"? Those movies were bad but people liked them because they were bad. It's called "camp". That's why I liked this series: It was goofy.

Why else do you think there're so many fans for "Glen or Glenda?" or "Plan 9 From Outer Space" or "Manos: Hands of Fate"? Surely not because they were actually good.

Oh my God! Apparently I have a split personality who also types on IMDb. I can't imagine how otherwise there could be a person who can speak for my opinions.

Opinions are different for people. You like the original movie however Wikipedia says that it had poor box officer performances (except in the UK) and that Sam Jones was nominated for a Golden Rasberry for worst lead actor so I'd have to say that there were people who disagreed with your opinion there.

Actually, the Flash Gordon series wasn't camp, it can certainly be considered "cheese"/"cheesy" though. Unfortunately the terms "camp" and "cheese/cheesy" have come to mistakenly be used interchangeably even though they apply to different situations. Part of the confusion may be because the two conditions can be similar.

Camp/campy -- Is done on purpose. A campy TV series/movie intends to make fun of [or even parody] its genre or the property it's based on. Great examples include the 60s Batman TV series, Flash Gordon (1980), Zorro, the Gay Blade (1981), and Casino Royale (1967). [also the upcoming Land of the Lost movie]

Cheese/cheesy -- Is unintentional [and also not limited by budget]. While audiences find humor in "cheesy" movie or television show, humor/comedy was not the original intent of those making it. The bulk of Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes are built around movies (and even some tv episodes) that are cheesy. Godzilla vs. Megalon, The Killer Shrews, and even a more recent movies such as Battlefield Earth and The Spirit fall under the cheesy category.

Ah, apologies. Some semesters ago, I was in an English class which did a unit on what made something "camp" (in which we read the work "Notes on Camp"). Pink Flamingos was the example the teacher used when asking if something was camp or not.

But yes then, cheese would be what I meant (yummy! :P)

Fine then. You are a narrow-minded pig who can't see out his own rear. Fact.

Did I ever say I wanted it back? No. I said I liked it for its unintentional humor.

Why don't you go start a religion worshiping the other versions of Flash Gordon?

Look, did I say it was good? Did I say I bought figurines? No! I like it the same way I like "Manos: Hands of Fate" or "Titanic: The Animated Movie" (you want a stinker, go after that).

If you hate this freaking series so much, WHY DO YOU STICK AROUND HERE? The series is over, there's another movie in the works, why are you still here? If you really didn't care, you'd just go off somewhere else.

For the love of me, I don't get it. If people hate a movie or something, why is that the board they virtually live on? If someone hates or dislikes something so much, one would think they'd just IGNORE it.

Nope, I quite liked this series. It's fun and unpretentious, unlike one of the other big name sci-fi shows that was on during the same time period.

Asides from the 1980s movie, I didn't follow Flash Gordon much, so I have no qualms about it being completely different to the old stuff. I do understand people who do, though, since I didn't think much of the 2009 Star Trek movie, but I have better things to do than dole out typed diarrhea over and over again to the people who do like that movie ;-).

I'm just watching it and really don't see why all the attacks. Only major flaw are low-budget effects, but it didn't stop Smallville, right?

reply

Smallville had a bigger budget than this show. Just rewatch the pilots of both shows again, and you will have to agree. The SFX in Smallville are way more impressive than anything in this crappy version Flash Gordon.

reply

I had no problem with it. It was kind of funny.

I recorded it some time ago and just re-watched some episodes today and found it entertaining.

I'm just surprised that it didn't at least last two seasons or more; considering the low budget.

I caught several episodes in syndication, and while not the best show out there, I too never saw anything bad enough to justify the hate...

heck, I found a Mill Creek Box set and bought a Copy
