I haven't seen the pilot episode since the first UK broadcast, so can somebody remind me what Sam's parents got out of their deal with the Devil?

Sam's dad got really sick and almost died. Becuase they didn't want children in the first place they made the deal and the father survived, but then his mum 'magically' got pregnant.
