He has powers but haven't discovered them yet or doesn't know how to control it.

im not going to compare a (probable) demon spawn to a hiker but... i was watching a show on discovery a man who was hiking had a 900ish pound boulder fall on him in this life or death situation he was able to pick up the boulder just enough to get it off of him and put it to the side, and no he wasnt the size of hulk hogan
now making judgements from this (rare) situation perhaps his inner demon powers woke and were able to take care of the situation, also in one episode some demons try to drop a washer (or dryer?) on sam and it stopped right above him then fell beside him so maybe he dosent control his powers they only awaken when he is facing death?
or another possible situation, although his (probable) father satan acts as if he dosent care he constantly has a protective eye on his top demon hunter?
food for though i dont know the series may or may not have been cancelled so we may or may not ever have a definative answer and be left with that cliff hanger

My 4'11", 90 lb. grandmother once lifted a car off my 8 year old uncle, and this was back in the 1930's so it was a substantial car. OTOH she was so mean I can easily believe she had a little demon blood.
you @ss hole i said above that i wasnt comparing demons to humans only the incredible things we can sometimes accomplish

shareHe got special powers/reminders for each of the souls, originally the devil gave no info on the escaped souls, but since then he has been giving dossiers on the demons. He had some sort of telekinetic ability in the first episode, which was mainly given to him to save Andi (the washing machine scene) and it came in handy later. Occasionally the abilities were helpful to stopping the soul sometimes they weren't (i.e. the bugs on everything he touched, the slipping on everything with the slime soul)
Mainly the reason he didnt maintain the powers was for the sake of storytelling, he wouldnt need his powerless friends' help if he had all the powers he exhibited at his disposal. Suchas as all the times where the vessel got knocked out of his hands suchas in the "love bullets and blacktop" episode, where Sock and Ben had to sing the song to distract the soul while sam took her out and then ran over to get the vessel, he would have just TK'd it into his hands and used it. And I'm sure money had something to do with it too, the budget likely restricted use of certain effects, plus Director's visions, as there were several different directors used throughout the series (in the american since of the word), some probably preferred to cast him as a normal
guy while others would want to have him utilize his connections with the devil.
