What with crowes characters father being an early civil rights leader and author of forerunner of magna carts, the ww2 landing craft and maid Marion turning into a marauding Joan of arc this was an unmitigated disaster!
Crowes rabble rousing was just another rehash of his gladiator exploits and the less said about the accent the better.
movie was god-awful thanks to Ridley Scott again showing that he knows absolutely nothing about history. Gladiator was a mess in its history, as was Kingdom of Heaven, so of course he screws up Robin Hood too... but this time he really does it the whole way... The portrayal of King Richard alone made me wanna turn off the movie after less than 20 minutes, but I hoped it would get better, so I continued watching. So, Richard dying on the way back from the Crusade? Sorry, Ridley, read a history book. Thanks to all the other Robin Hood films I would've thought it would be common knowledge by now, that Richard returned after being captured in Austria on his return from the Crusades (and died a few years later from a crossbow bolt (yes, he at least got that part right) in the arms of his mother...) Him plundering his way through France on the way back from the Crusade made absolutely no sense either, but I guess Scott had to do that to make him even more unlikable (why he had to portray him like a total jerk in the first place remains a mystery to me).
And that's just the first 20 minutes of the film... before the film even really starts, it has already discredited itself, showing that the makers knew absolutely nothing about the history the film is set in.
Add to that all the *beep* you mentioned in your OP and a lot of other stuff that made absolutely no sense, we have a historic *beep* It's a shame actually, because the movie also proves that Scott IS a good director (technically the film is very good, but all those rapes of primary school history knowledge just prevented me from enjoying this stuff).
why he had to portray him like a total jerk in the first place remains a mystery to me
Actually that's about the only thing I reckon Scott got historically right. The man was a total jerk, and personally I wouldn't have wanted to be in the same province as him, ever. All the Angevins were scary to be around, but Richard has a good claim to be the nastiest of them.
