Gladiator II

So much like Gladiator, except Crowe doesn't die.

1. Old blind man is like Richard Harris, is like Crowe's 'father'. He gets killed, Russell avenges it.

2. Cate B. substitutes for Connie Nielson. Yeah I know, they don't live happily ever after.

3. Same kind of action, fighting scenes with plenty of gore

4. The band of merry men are like the slaves in Gladiator bonding with Crowe to fight

What else...can't remember, but - just felt like a re-run as far as I'm concerned.

I think they tried to capture that lightning in the battle a second time, but the two are tonally very different.

Gladiator is like a love story that accepts death and is surrounded by violence.

Robin Hood is a story that romantices its violence and characters and has more to do with legends and tall tales than with death or violence

I'd say the similarity with Gladiator (obviously aside from casting Crowe as the lead) was in having a likeable older monarch that the hero serves dying early on and being succeeded by a less likeable relative with a dangerous belief in absolute rule that conflicts with the plan for a more moderate system that the hero aims or has been tasked with introducing.
