Ending, problems with film (Spoilers)

I actually liked this film. Ordered it on-demand for $4.99, and felt I got my money's worth. They didn't take the easy, happy-ending way out, and I thought the ending was surprisingly good. They make you think the father succeeded, only to have it turn out that the little boy is about to be eaten. ("daddy?...") Surprisingly creepy and disturbing for an American horror film, and somewhat reminiscint of "The Ring."

Problems -- obviously low budget, and some production values. Showing the monster way too soon in the movie. Not really explaining how the spiders/bites played out, how/when she laid eggs or reproduced, etc. These things could've been clarified. But I think the ending was pretty clear, if disturbing.

I can understand why some felt the ending too negative (no one likes seeing kids die), but that's also what made it unexpected and effective. (In Cujo the book, the child dies, making it even more disturbing, but they change it in the movie.) But there's no real question what the ending involved if you think it through, I believe. Nothing else makes sense. (If you want to think that the police suddenly arrived and saved the kid, you're welcome to. It's certainly theoretically possible. But there's no way the approaching figure was the dad, given what was coming from behind. Just wouldn't make sense as an ending. Was either the girl or a monster.
