I don't know if anyone else has read the short-story by John Connolly that this film is based on, but I was bloody surprised to learn it would be set in America.
While the story never explicitly stated its location, the fact that it revolves around a scary nearby hill/mound and the strange creatures possibly living in it always seemed to suggest to me that it was some form of fairy-hill, and as such probably set in Britain or Ireland... but bloody rural Illinois?
I just can't picture it set in America for some reason. And the fact that Kevin Costner is set to star as the father is also very suspect.
I'm a big John Connolly fan and just hope this film will do him justice.
You've obviously never heard of the Cahokia Mounds and the ancient, mysterious(i.e. we don't know much about them) and enormous culture that disappeared at least a thousand years before the white man arrived. They're somewhat near St Louis on the Illinois side of the Missippi. But Wilmywood is right - the film is being shot in Charleston, SC, and possibly also Edisto Island. Errr... excuse me - I meant to say bloody Charleston and bloody Edisto Island;)
I kept thinking they said it was SC, but maybe that's where they moved from? I am more confused now! hehe I lived in rural Illinois for some time, and Illinois (and the midwest in general, but esp. Illinois) plays host to some of the creepiest and extensive tales of hauntings and paranormal events. There are quite a few rolling estates hidden in the reeds there, and it could work, but I took it to be more a southern tale. I don't know. Confusing!
I thought it was South Carolina. Yes, it would be apt if a John Connolly story were set in a rural England or perhaps Irish or Scottish or Welsh countryside, but I didn't have a problem with it set in America. I have more problem with where it was, to be honest. It seemed like it was New Orleans. I kept waiting for Kate Hudson to show up with Peter Sarsgaard to ask Kevin for a Skeleton Key.
I live in Southern Wisconsin and we are home to some numerous numerous effigy mounds made by indians and people that were here thousands of years before the white man. I just took a class that explained all this and thats the only reason why I know it but Fort Atkinson, WI also has the only existing intaglio effigy mound known in the world.........And thats a fact. So I was surprised this movie didnt take place in IL or WI for that matter.
WI also has the only existing intaglio effigy mound known in the world.........And thats a fact
The one at Fort Atkinson is referred to as "the last remaining intaglio in the state" from several sources.
There are other effigy mounds remaining in the other states in the area (Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa).
Intaglio refers to a design cut into the ground (in any shape, whether it be a square, oval, rectangle, etc), effigy is the categorization specifically of mounds built in the shape of animals.
There are "Intaglio" mounds all over America.
But there are remaining intaglio effigy mounds in states other than Wisconsin. __________________
In which case, the mound in this movie is simply a mound. Of the round variety. It's not an effigy mound. It's not in the shape of any animal.

Im pretty sure I never stated that there were no other effigy mounds located in other states. However the Intaglio mound in Fort Atkinson, is not only the only intaglio mound in WI but also known in the world. I think you have that a little confused.
"Panther Intaglio Effigy Mound - Ft. Atkinson, WI - New World ...
Discovered in 1850, this is the only known intaglio Effigy mound in the world. It is located on Hwy 106 west of Ft. Atkinson, WI
However the Intaglio mound in Fort Atkinson, is not only the only intaglio mound in WI but also known in the world. I think you have that a little confused.
Intaglio is a reference from art that applies to a design cut into a hard surface. In the case of burial mounds, that surface is the ground.
However,
Intaglio *broadly* broadly applies to burial mounds which are raised above the natural surface of the terrain.
It may be the only Intaglio cut out, but there are also other Intaglio cut outs on other Continents.
The construction of an effigy mound would usually begin by digging out a depression, a precise intaglio of the shape of the mound. Then successive layers of differently colored soils—called "ceremonial earths" by the archaeologists—would be laid down.
Any mound that was designed by digging out a depression pattern and then filling it in is also an Intaglio Mound.
And again, what does that have to do with the Mound in the movie?
It's not an effigy mound. And it may not even be an Intaglio either. There's no indication they dug out an impression. The only digging was done by the "Dieties" making tunnels under it.
In the movie, I'm pretty sure it's in South Carolina. He drives to Charleston and states he will be back in 4-5 hours, indicating a trip perhaps 1 1/2 or 2 hours away. reply share
