*SPOILERS!* How do welts on her neck equal...

What's the deal with the welts/rash on her neck? At one point, they looked almost like vampire bites, with double puncture wounds. Since these mound dwellers have teeth that look like a mouthful of razor-sharp shark teeth, it would seem they would shred her neck to pieces by biting her, so...? What's with the welts?

There were things in this movie that just were not explained or explored very well. When Louisa was in the shower, I took it to mean that the blood meant intercourse, which then made me question the significance of the neck rash.

Any thoughts?

I thought it might have been from lying in the dirt for too long. Like how wood chips can kind of scratch your skin? Something like that maybe?

Also, the blood was her period. Showing sexual maturity and how she would be able to "mate" later on.

reply

I'm not sure about the significance of the rashes on her back but I know the blood was NOT her period. She was RAPED by a (or several) mound walker losing her her virginity hence the bleeding. I must admit, it spooked me that something so vile happened to a 14 year old.

There's a lot that not's really clearly explained. But to me, the bites resembled spider bites, and the spiders appeared associated with the mound-creatures. Maybe when the creatures bit her, they laid eggs or implanted some kind of poison that gradually infected her.

Were you not paying attention?
The ants. It's the ants.
It had nothing to do with losing her virginity.
It's like the ants, she has to find a place to stay in the mound then the individual ants - mound-walkers, would come to her and mate. She wasn't in the mound yet. Therefore they couldn't have mated yet.

I agree with kaity....My son gets bitten by fire ants and they leave those little blisters.

I don't agree. The shower was the typical "I've been raped" shower scene. She's covered in mud like she tried to resist, the way she sits in the bathtub holding her legs and absent, locking the door and not answering to his father,...

argh, mvl1994, I really really really don't want to insult you in any way, but I just hate it, when people complain about movies for NOT explaining every single tiny detail how things are and how they come. That's wrong with so many modern movies out there, they don't let room for us Viewers to THINK about it ourselfs and to come up with theories, discuss them, in one Word: Share. That's how u can identify a good movie, just listen to the people who just saw it, how they discuss the mysterious, not explained parts of the movie, how they develop own theories, and give them stuff to talk about for hours and hours when everybody coming out of mainstream-stuff like Saw 286 almost forgot the movie already.

I'll admit, The New Daughter may not be the best example for that, because it explained quite much, but anyway, I loved how some details just were shown very subtle like that the Daughter was raped by these mould-things. It was just shown how she sits in the bathtub, dirty, scared and nervous and a bit of blood flushing down the sink, the rest was up to us to understand, that she just lost her virginity to someone.

About her neck: well I think it was just some minor bites these things gave her whilst raping her... I mean she would not let it happen without trying to defend herself, right?

When you finally see the creatures, you see that they have razor sharp teeth. I believe they bit her as well as she got ant bites and welts. Maybe even spider bites.
