What happened to the first mom who lived there?

Okay, so the mom locked the daughter in the room from outside, no food or water. Was this to protect her, because the monsters were coming for her? Or an indirect way to kill her, as the grandpa hinted, since she knew the daughter was messed up?

And what happened to the mom? Was she eaten by the monsters? Did she become a queen? Or did she just disappear like Costner's wife?

I think she was trying to protect herself from her daughter .....it seems like her daughter just b/c the new queen ( the grandfather said that the girl was carrying something in her...acting strangely)
I don't think she had the willpower and strength to kill her daughter like her father implied...he had to do what his daughter couldn't do.
I don't think Costner's wife disappeared....she left the family and walked off with another man.
I think the grandfather's daughter...probably was killed by the monsters....and disappeared in a similar fashion as the nanny.

do you think this is the 1st mound crawler we see on the roof @ the beg. of the movie; outside lousia (sp) window?? it didnt occur to me until aftet the movie ended, that perhaps the dead granddaughter, that the grandfather had killed, had wandered back to the house and was stuck. and when the daughter is writing @ her desk & kc comes in 2 say goodnight and then leaves and then the cat perks up etc etc etc, that its the granddaughter... and those were her footprints.

I don't think it was the granddaughter because he had been killed, burned up. Plus the Scientist said that the creatures were all males. I noticed it the first time I saw it but it DIDN'T click it WAS a creature of some sort even though I THOUGHT, that was what I saw. I did NOT think it looked like a cat, but because I thought this was going to be more of a "ghost or supernatural possession" story, it did NOT click that they WERE in fact creatures, (aliens, because *aliens* were my take on this film by the middle/end). But, interesting theory!

John James's wife had an affair and got preggers and they divorced. That's why Louisa was so angry at her. The mom of the girl who died in the fire is kind of a mystery I think. The cops, I believe, were still looking for her. And on the DVD they show deleted scenes and one is of John James visiting the witchy ex. I love this movie!
