I cannot really see the connection to indians

Am I the only one who is confused by the connection of Indians and those mound walkers? Were those mound walkers really deities who turned so nasty during the last 1000 years like this historian said, where they paranormal or just some weird species that turned like that after living in the underground for so many centuries like in "The Descent"?
I must say I think the context of natives and those creatures was rather poorly explained/illustrated.
But all in one I liked the movie.

I thought it was pretty clear. They were creatures that always have lived in the ground, and the Indians treated them like Deities.

It wasn't a primary focus of the film, because the movie was more about his family not the creatures. I too liked it.

HUH! I was thinking there were aliens, but your theory, anji-13, makes much better sense! Whatever they were, I did NOT think they were ghost or something supernatural.

Yeah, blame it on the Indians, the Mayas, the Incas, and of course with a dash of Ancient Aliens, and a pinch of ETs and a sprinkle of mythology. Surely they all must have known it better.
