why in the end [spoiler]
he decided to die together with his infected daughter instead of run then ignite the gas?
only because he promised he won't leave the daughter?
he decided to die together with his infected daughter instead of run then ignite the gas?
only because he promised he won't leave the daughter?
Remember both kids were rocking and reeling because their MOM left them for another man. The father was so devoted he promised he would not leave her. He truly thought the little boy might have a chance. He didn't know the little boy would go outside.
shareJudging by the series of bad judgement calls he made leading up to that event, I'd surmise he has an IQ of a day old Turnip.
shareIt's not clear that the father died. If you watch it again you can clearly see the silhouette of someone (or something) walking out of the woods after he ignites the fire.
shareBut you also hear that creepy noise, leading you to believe that it was one of those creatures...
You can lead a herring to water, but you have to walk really fast or he'll die.- Rose Nylund
that noise was made by the creature behind the boy you see creeping towards him, i really think it was the father because the reflection showed a man walking normally, the creatures lurk, or crouch as they walk, the reflection wasn't doing this, and the kid said dad. If it really wasn't the dad then they wouldn't have even done that, it makes no sense, they cold have ended it just with the kid looking at the blaze and the creature comes up behind him, the fact that they even showed the reflection i think shows Costner is still alive
shareHonestly, I think the reflection was a creature, as were the creatures behind him.
The reason he says "daddy" is because he isn't sure, and hopes it is his daddy. And it makes the ending even more creepy. But no other explanation really makes sense. We're supposed to hope at first that it is in fact his dad, somehow escaped from the fire, but once we see the creatures behind the boy, we realize that the reflection is not his dad, but either the transformed daughter, or another creature. (I.e., the dad didn't save the day like he tried to, and not even the son will be saved.)
The whole point of the ending is to be incredibly creepy. That can only happen if everyone in fact dies (or is going to). Hence the sudden cut to black. If the ending is one where the father survives, with creatures appearing behind the son, then it isn't really an ending at all, but simply an unfinished movie.
As I said before, Dad never thought Sam would go outside during any of this. He was always such a scared little boy. What I think happened was the cops got there and saved the kid. I do hope Kevin's character made it out. That I'm not certain of. But unless you read the actual story this was based on (no not a true story), you might not know what the author intended. He might have just wanted you to guess.
sharebut it doesnt make any sense to show the reflection, if that wasn't his dad why would we need to see it? we already know the kid is screwed with the creature walking behind him, so why add that out of the way thing that you might not even see? i think its a glimpse to those watching closely enough that he is alive, i like i said before, the reflection is walking upright, the creatures crouch
shareI think the sound is not from the creature lurking behind the boy. That sound is different. It sounds like a shotgun being readied for use. I think the person in the reflection is the dad and he's holding a shotgun. Listen carefully to the sound.
shareIn the reflection of Sam's book it was a human man walking. Probably the dad.
I watched this part on dvd in slow motion and it was one of the creatures behind Sam. You could see the hands and the shape of the head.
So most likely the little boy died, unless the police showed up RIGHT THEN.
In which case they would have shown that.
If it was the dad walking toward the boy did he have a shot gun?
You know how when you kick over an ant bed they go crazy? Same thing was happening. There were probably lots of them hiding in the woods.

makes perfect sense. we see the reflection, and i thought the man in the reflection was walking like a creature actually, but i thought maybe was wounded...
but then there are those strange creepy noises and then we see the creatures behind the kid, so it was clear enough that it was his dad but just a creature.
they WANTED us to have hope for the dad being alive, just like the kid thought, but then when we see the creatures out hope dies and that is very creepyyy
I agree Zando. It is obvious (to me) the boy dies. I just watched the last bit a couple times again to see and the kid is being surrounded and about to be pounced on. The reflection in the picture is slouching and sort of "slinking" towards the boy. Even if it was the dad, the closest monster is right behind the boy and any attempt to shoot the monster from that range would take the kid out as well.
The camera is towards the boy at the end and within the picture you see at least 3 monsters behind him and possibly one coming at him from the front. That implies to me that there were far more creatures around than just what was in the frame. I believe the whole family died within a few minutes of each other.
The great thing about an ambiguous ending like this is that people can take from it what they want, within reason. I think the authors intent was clear though and I'm just enough intrigued to read the book myself.
That being said, it's good to see a movie where the ending isn't a bunch of fuzzy bunnies dancing around blowing rainbows and sunshine out their asses. After all, a happy ending is just a story that hasn't finished yet.
You guys must have watched a different version of me or turn on your surround sound. The reflection was the dad walking out of the fire, and there were three mound walkers in the background not just one (one crawling down the tree, one down the side of the house, and one right behind the boy) the sound is a shotgun chambering a round.
If the director wanted to show the perceived death of the boy their would be no reason to show four mound walkers (three behind him and one as the reflection). The point of showing three mound walkers and the dad with the shotgun was to give the audience the perception the fight would still go on and the dad would be there to save his son.
I think you're right, jilted...and most people forget what that old man told him about what he did: "A father will do anything to protect his daughter, even the worst of it." The old man was still living and so Kevin's character had to do the same. It was too late to save Louisa so he had to do "the worst of it". I don't know if I have surround sound or not. Doubt it but when I get my player working again I'll see.
shareEven the closed caption at the end says "screeching" not "shotgun cock". It was supposed to make us think that it COULD have been the dad. I think it was pretty obvious that the figure was a monster and the it was supposed to be scary that the little boy was so hopeful. He was a gonner!!!
shareIts the Dad. The boy has a picture of his family. Im not saying that they survive but its the Dad.
shareI listened real closely and heard the barely audible sound of rotors on a stealth copter. I think it was Seal Team 6 coming to the rescue.
At least that's what I think I may have heard, possibly.
I still think Tony DiNozzo Sr. is a spy/NCIS
Nope, sorry, I don't think that's it.
I just re listened to the end and I heard the sound of Costner's career getting flushed down the loo.
I still think Tony DiNozzo Sr. is a spy/NCIS
You are a jackass isreal whatever. Listen carefully...THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A GREAT ACTOR NAMED KEVIN COSTNER, ACADEMY AWARD WINNER. HE IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE...HE WILL ALWAYS BE OUT THERE MAKING GREAT MOVIES. GOT IT???????
yYou
Is that like acadamy award winner Cuba Gooding, or Adrien Brody...fanboy? I think I got it.
I still think Tony DiNozzo Sr. is a spy/NCIS
No, it's not. And I'm not a boy. Kevin is a mainstay in the movie world. Why do you bother to come to any of his movies? And you know there will ALWAYS be a ready arguement ready for you any time. You better get it.
shareWhat...you think demi-gods can't fall? Idols can't be discarded? This movie is a major fail...on every level...at least Waterworld had Dennis Hopper chewing the scenery...
There's a time to gracefully decline doing something just for the sake of a paycheck or trying to keep oneself in the game. Even the coy little opening scene was so pretentious and self serving...wait, whose legs are those...wait, it sounds like, the credits say it will be....YES!...it is Kevin Costner, oh glory!
I am sure Costner has put aside a few sheckels, and maybe he could find more rewarding work behind the camera...but unless a script comes to him that demands a little more than phoning in a performance...has some nuance and depth, he should probably leave the hand wringing concerned father roles to Jim Belushi.

The reflection is a creature from the mound. This was to make the end of the film seem more dire, that's all. It's clear by the end that the little boy is NOT going to survive.

I had the misfortune to see this garbage and I have to disagree with your assessment. And I can clear this up once and for all. I have a device that makes muffled sounds heard clearly. You know the ones you see in movies that identify a blackmailers voice. I put the sound through my machine at least 4 times and it is hooves of horses that can be heard in the background. I would assume the Calvary is coming for them. Costner is trying to relive his career by having us go back to when he actually matter. Dancing with Wolves. But it looks like the only thing he is dancing with now is himself. Nope, sorry, I don't think that's it.
I just re listened to the end and I heard the sound of Costner's career getting flushed down the loo.
I watched this on Netflix. I said gee I have seen a Costner movie is a few years. I actually fell alseep and woke up and it was apparent I did not miss a thing. Netflix is a wonderful thing. Where else can you get instant verification that someone careers is still in the sewer. Or actually watch people commit career suicide.
Ah...such a beautiful invention is the IGNORE button for A$$holes like Israel whatever and the guy following him. What morons. TND is a very good movie and everyone in it was excellent. Yester, you should've included a SPOILER in your post, but what's done is done. Just ignore all the morons who have to bad mouth this and KC. They're worse than turds in the ocean puking up the beaches.
shareone189teen50five, in general I have found your posts be be completely useless. In general you seem to prefer to insult other rather than addressing their points, then take your opinion to be universal fact. If you believe this movie not to be boring, then it is not boring to everyone - and if you find one person rude, then the whole world must find that person to be rude. In other words, you are displaying all the characteristics of what is deemed a 'troll'.
I have encountered people who like gansta rap, but I find it misogynistic crap. I would argue against its objectifying and degrading lyrics to support my point, but still can agree that the musicality of gansta rap (the underlying beats) can have merit. I like SF movies, especially ones that are done with a strong eye towards current scientific theory - however, I know many people who detest SF and find it the most boring thing in the world. This is purely preference based, and I have no rational course of argument - they don't like it, I like it... some people don't like blue, others do... opinion, no right or wrong.
In your world, I think you have to be right - even if the item under discussion is an opinion. You complain about end spoilers being posted here although they were clearly marked, the only reason I am on this forum right now is to look at those spoilers to see how others interpreted this open ending to the film and see if anyone had and <em>conclusive</em> proof one way or the other.
However, that being said, you have made a very good point - there is an 'ignore user' option now for those unable to self-filter what they read. It will be useful for those who wish never to have contradictory world view introduced into the bubble world they build around themselves. I, on the other hand, will take in other views - even those such as yours which basically is accusing me of being a 'wrong minded' person - and I hope you read this and understand there is no right or wrong answer to the question 'Do you like movies with Kevin Cosner in them'. It would be like me saying if you don't like David Lynch films or the anime Akira, then you are just a moron who can't think for themselves and are unworthy for posting on the web... that would just be wrong. Feel free to dislike what I like.
PS - Yes, I found this movie to have lackluster performance, slow pacing, poor script writing, and poor editing. I usually can dive into any crappy film I come across and immerse myself in it - but with this film I could not suspend my disbelief and thus was constantly aware that I was in the film, and I found myself constantly distracted by other things in the room because I couldn't care anything for the characters. Others may, such as yourself, enjoy this... myself, I view it as just another "typical Hollywood film cranked out with some FXs and a big-name actor to rake in the money".
All of you are idiots. The ending was ambiguous for one reason only...a straight to video sequel. The kid will be saved by his dying father, so that Costner doesn't have to appear again.
shareTalk about a post being useless...look in the mirror pal. I am not going to waste time with your lecturing drivel. I addressed the person called israel whatever. He was a jerk. In other words, you may have your opinion but I wasn't speaking to you. I give up with you people. WATCH WHAT THE HELL YOU WANT. I WILL DO THE SAME.

The dad is still human, he didn't become any creature. I think the police got there, as they were called, dad blew up the mound because he had no choice. It was too late for Luisa and the little boy sees the dad coming at him ok. He probably took the rifle and killed the ones in behind Sam and maybe the cops did too. There are all kinds of theories. I don't know. But one poster said they paused the movie and in the picture you can see Dad's' reflection. That's how I'd like to think it ended. Maybe some of you like a morbid ending. But it's a thriller and quite often they're meant to be mysterious at the end.

It's hard to tell if the reflection is a creature or the dad limping after the explosion. You can hear a metallic sound at the end. My theory is the dad made it out and shoots the creature. That's the way I would have liked it to end anyways. I doubt it's the police as the phones weren't working. He may have called the police from the radio in the car though but if the police had come in response to an officer being mauled there would be sirens all over the place.
