Why did they go the new continuity route?

I’m fine with Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, but why didn’t they just do like other series have done such as Batman and James Bond and continue the same storyline with new actors?

I guess to distinguish themselves from the Maguire movies. Honestly if they skipped the origin story but made it clear this was a different Peter Parker, I would had been fine.

I'd argue it didn't work with the Batman movies in the 90s and frankly I'd argue the majority of James Bond movies don't really have much continuity. Frankly I am glad they rebooted after Raimi ruined the origin by having it turn out his Uncle still might have gotten killed even if he'd stopped the robber. Then again I hated Sand Man being Uncle Ben's killer at all.
