I apologise for turning my back on Game of Thrones

When I was watching it for its bulk, I found it really quite dark and entertaining, but I started criticising it in the last season for ruining all that came before.

Well, GRRM's books were used for half of the eight seasons and it was AWESOME then, and the rest was based on his notes which were OK, but the writers Benioff and Weiss just lost patience in the last season and turned in a whole bunch of nonsensical CRAP because they thought they'd have a Star Wars trilogy on their hands, but it never came to be and thus GoT suffered at the end.

But to be honest, I LOVED LOVED LOVED all the early stuff and don't consider it in any way wasted time. I think it's just that if a literary work is incomplete, this sort of thing is bound to happen with an adaptation for TV: if the original writers notes aren't there or enough, then the writers will make up any old shit. Case in point: Rings of Power, and Tolkien NEVER wrote ANY of that!

I agree, it's just unfortunate that GoT had a few bad episodes that ruined it for some people. In my opinion, the last second saves is what became the most ridiculous part of the show and that scene where Arya almost gets killed by muliple stab wounds was pretty bad too.

The ending didn't even bother me that much. It just felt rushed and not very well thought out. In fact, I disagree with you on the Star Wars analogy, I think D&D just got tired of doing the show and they rushed it.

Well, they had been working on it for years, and something new came along, they just wanted off the GoT train.

I agree. While the series was going on, I was pretty critical of the last four seasons. Now that GoT has been off the air for years and I have been suffering through what passes as television entertainment nowadays, I rewatched GoT and I am much more sympathetic towards the last four seasons. How I rank the seasons now, including House of Dragons

Season 4 (the best, but still have trouble with Brienne besting the Hound, even if he was sick)
Season 2
Season 3
Season 1
Season 6
Season 7
Season 5 (Writing for the Sand Snakes could have been better)
Season 1 of HoD
Season 8 (Myriad of reason why this is the worst season of the series)

Oh, and I have decided I really can't blame D&D for a not writing a satisfactory ending to the story as not even GRRM can do it.
