Could Tommen have been the ruler Varys and Tyrion should have wanted?

I have posted before about the one flaw that the early writing got wrong about Tyrion was that I don't believe he would have joined an army to bring down his Nephew that he genuinely cared for.

Now, it almost seems as if the ruler that they should have hoped for was already on the throne. Tommen backed by Tywin at first would have at least been a stable ruler. eventually Tommen would have grown into his own and from all signs he would have been a kind and gentle ruler.

I was as happy as anyone when Tyrion killed Tywin, but honestly that decision has lead to tons of suffering and death inside Kings Landing.

I also question Vary's motives in these later shows. He had to have known that Viserys was every bit as bad of a potential ruler as Dany has become, yet he secretly worked on gaining him back the throne. I can't tell if this is meant to be a change of heart, or an example of questionable writing.

I always thought that if Margaery had survived she could've been a positive influence on Tommen and guided him in the right direction and possibly even have dealt with Cersei because she understood exactly what she was..
But either way..with Tywin or Maraery; it would've changed the whole landscape and not made much of a show.

I could never figure out if I'd figured Vary's wrong in the first place or if they elected to manipulate his motivations the last few seasons.

Glad I'm not the only one on Varys. I agree Margaery would have been good for Tommen. And I actually believe Tywin would have supported that process. I don't think he cared as much about ruling as he did for the legacy of his family.

Tommen and Margarey backed by Tywin and Olenna would have been ideal rulers, as I've said before, and fairly happy in their personal lives! Tommen really was the ideal king, he was a nice boy who wanted to please, so he would have looked noble in his regal finery and done whatever his advisors told him to, and he'd have stayed that way as an adult. Whenever he appeared in public he'd have looked great and done something that showed his good nature, so the populace would have adored him. Tywin and Olenna and whatever successors Margarey appointed would have kept the kingdom stable and prosperous, and the next generation of "Baratheons" would have been less inbred and therefore hopefully more stable. Margarey really was the last great hope of the "Baratheon" dynasty.

Yes, Tommen is exactly the sort of person a royal advisor likes to see on the throne, and it's a damn shame that Cersei had to fuck it all up. She really did deserve worse than to die being comforted by her one true love.

Yes. Tommen never had a chance. His mother completely undermined him and made it impossible for him to rule.

Ironically, Tywin getting killed is what really fucked everyone over.

Tommen ruling with Tywin as his Hand, Margaery by his side helping him and a decent small council with Varys accepting Tommen or at least not helping to undermine him would have been the ideal situation for Westeros. With Tywin controlling Cersei and sending her away to either Casterly Rock or Highgarden, because she did nothing but damage Tommen.

Although Varys could never get it through his head that he should try to help the current King and not hope that Dany is better. That's real irony, he protected Dany her whole life and undermined Robert and then the Lannisters and she ended up being the one to kill him and destroy the city.

Yep Varys was one of my favorite characters, but he really did mess that decision up.

In addition to what I said above, I'd like to add that the ascendancy of King Tommen showed that Olenna Tyrell was the only person acting in the best interests of Westeros. She got rid of a sociopathic king before he could do much damage, and replaced him with a nice guy who'd look regal and do what his queen and advisers told him to do. She put a very bright and politically astute young woman in as queen, to rule and manage after she'd gone. She kept a good relationship with Tywin Lannister, while maneuvering to make herself and then Margarey the true power behind the throne in the future. If Dany had invaded when she was in charge, the only lord of Westeros who would have supporter her cause would have been Euron Greyjoy, and Dany would probably have dropped her invasion plans rather than marry that creep. If Jon Snow had come to Tommen's court for help fighting the Others, Tommen would have been told he was all for doing all he could to save the living.

There was the bright future of Westeros right there in one wrinkled little package, and Cersei and Jamie fucked it all up.
