Sam being upset about his father

doesn’t seem right to me. His father would have murdered him if he hadn’t renounced his name and joined the Night’s Watch.

He kind of shook off the news about his father. Not his brother though.

reply

he wasn't

he was upset about his brother, though

reply

He will get over it once he realizes that he is the new lord of Horn Hill.

Very cheesy, they're trying to have Sam push Jon to rival Dany for the throne, just as the Dead are about to attack, because this is a soap-opera-with-violence and they can't possibly let the course of true love run smoothly. It will all end when Dany realizes that she can end the rivalry by marrying him, and Jon will object because she's his aunt and he's an idiot, you know how it will go.

I really wish they'd gone for something a bit less predictable with so little time left, especially as Sam's father was such dick that Sam can't possibly feel any real grief.

I think this will create a rift bigger than you think. Dany is power hungry and has achieved much of what she has by conquering. Jon has achieved what he has (against his wishes) by bringing people together. This does not seem like a love connection anymore.
None of this will sit well with Dany. Can you imagine her bending the knee or relinquishing power easily?
And there is that other side to her...the side that barbecued Sam's family without mercy.
Whether you think Sam should care I'm pretty sure that anyone, even the abused, are going to be struck by the murder of even a family abuser. And Sam did love his brother and his brother was honorable.

I can see things being set up to where she has to be willing to give up the throne to gain the trust of the North. She won't actually have to though, Jon will turn it down.

It doesn't matter, you can't choose who you love and for some like Sam and Tyrion, despite the mistreatment of their family members, they still love them. My mother was treated badly by her mother, yet in the end, she cared for her because she loved her mother still.

You make a very good point.
