Of course he's a violent character so it is only fitting to see him meet his doom. But. He was underwritten/dumbed down, a patsy to fall as an example to what happens when you go against the family/bloodline as individual agent dubbed as a cancerous cell. Is this true, is the strength of an individual in numbers and loyalty to those numbers? I don't think so. A very strange turn in the series. Of course the chaos glorified by the LF himself got the better of him as a cold and neutral force. Only human right? Still, the nauseating bloodline agenda persisted throughout the episode as the word treason rang throughout its tight hallways.
Why was he wasting his time hanging around Winterfell anyway? He should have been running south to take over the Riverlands, massive power vacuum there. Okay, maybe he was waiting out the War of Two Queens and planning to re-emerge and deal with the winner when one emerged, but he should at least have taken over the Riverlands. That'd put him in charge of the northern half of Westeros, someone the new queen would have to take very seriously.
Instead he was just hanging around Winterfell, making trouble between Sansa and Arya just for something to do... look where that got him. Sloppy writing, really.
Well, maybe because LF is not a warrior and his strength lies in manipulation and deception? He couldn't pass up the grand opportunity to create chaos in Winterfell to get what he wanted while the KotN was gone. His fatal mistake was underestimating Sansa, but his plan was to win Sansa over while getting rid of Arya, which would have consolidated the North for him as it was.
I don't see it as poor writing, actually I see it as Littlefinger gravitating towards his strength. It would have been entirely out of character and his comfort zone to lead an army to retake the Riverlands instead taking the opportunity to seize Winterfell by way of deception and chaos that he saw as falling right into his lap with Jon gone and Sansa in charge.
I agree with this; he couldn't leave Winterfell without being sure of Sansa, which meant working to isolate her from Arya, Brienne and Jon while inserting himself as her mentor and support. As he knew she was wary of him, it was vital to change her attitude, and leaving wouldn't do that.
For sure, I told myself I will stop watching the series as soon as LF dies and guess what, he did, just like in a fairy tale he didn't saw it coming. Bran stark deus ex machina... childish affection for Sansa... not even saying anything about Arya the terminator...
In reality people like LF are untouchable, barely existing withing the society they rule over.
If he will still be alive in the books, I might read the next book just to see the difference.
In the show, he had to go because his days as a major threat were over - he can't fight Dany and her dragons, and he can't worm his way onto her team because Tyrion and Varys hate him. And he wouldn't throw all his wealth and power behind Cersei, because she can't beat dragons and Dothraki either. And he wouldn't throw his wealth and power behind the armies of the living, because he's a dick.
So really, his storyline had come do a dead end, because of forces beyond his control. Which might not matter in the books, because lately GRRM hasn't been caring whether his plots go anywhere.
I don't care anymore, it's so boring, I can't believe I lasted this far. I didn't know where the series were going but now I see it a mile away and I don't care.
