Thoughts on S7E2

1. NYMERIA! Damn, that scene was so sweet, yet heartbreaking. However, I refuse to believe that Nymeria is leaving for good. The direwolf must have gone to hunt food for Arya, and her pack will escort the girl back to Winterfell.

2. Hot Pie! Another heart-warming scene. I wouldn't have recognized him if Arya hadn't announced his name, though. It was certainly nice to see them together again, and talking like old friends.

3. Poor Sam has the most disgusting scenes this season... But at least he's trying to help Jorah. He has a heart of gold under all that chubbiness.

4. Missandei and Grey Worm's relationship is sweet. They both deserve love in their lives.

5. Euron is now a violent and sadistic little scumbag. Half the Sand Snakes are gone, and I doubt many people will miss them; except Dany needed them to take King's Landing.

6. Poor, poor Theon. All that violence seems to have triggered Reek to return. While I wish his redemption arc had continued more clearly, jumping into the sea was actually a good idea. He probably wouldn't have been able to win against Euron, and now he can go get help, or follow from a distance and try to save Yara.

reply

1. Yeah that was very cool. I knew Arya would one day reunite with her direwolf and to finally see it happen was great. We definitely haven't seen the last of Nymeria and her wolfpack!

2. A nice tribute to Season 2, Hot-Pie still working hard at the bakery was good to see.

3. Sam goes from book reader to medic pretty quickly, lets see if it pans out.

4. I'm not sure why the show is spending so much time on this relationship, with the pillar and stones missing it doesn't seem to affect them, these characters will definitely have a major part to play as we get closer to the end.

5. Euron's a drunk nutter that got his way on the open seas. It makes me mad that the Greyjoys didn't have a single lookout watching for enemy ships even with Yara and Theon knowing full well evil uncle Euron was out there with a fleet. Instead Yara goes for a lesbian encounter instead of actually being on guard and ready for attack.

6. Theon did exactly what I figured he would do, run away, which does seem cowardly on the outside but with that action of jumping in the water, he probably saved Yara for another day. It'll be funny watching Daenerys interrogate Theon as to what happened to her fleet and why he was still alive.

reply

1: Glad someone agrees with me that Nymeria won't be abandoning Arya. c;

2: He's still alive and well, which is a miracle onto itself, lol. Seems like he got his happily ever after.

3: Sam's a quick learner. He'll be fine... Hopefully.

4: Yeah, I'm trying not to think about how being castrated would affect their relationship.

5: Good point. They definitely should have had lookouts and been prepared to fight as needed. Also, that scene was actually kinda hard to follow with the dim lighting, sparks, and rain.

6: I hope Dany isn't cruel to him. Theon has suffered enough.

4. One of them will probably die soon.

5. I think this will be explained more thoroughly in a future episode. Simplest explanation is that they were hiding in the storm.

6. I'm sure Theon will tell her the truth, and will eventually end up giving his life to save Yara, to repay for the time she tried to rescue him. We see him landing back at Dragonstone in the preseason trailer, where he looks back out at the ocean and falls to his knees. The next shot
could be of the destroyed fleet in daytime. But the problem now is they can't bring up the Southern armies by sea, so whatever they had planned for the Dothraki may change. I think they'll have to march on foot to King's Landing after the Dothraki secure The Reach, which is where one of the major battles from the trailer take place, while the other battle is with Unsullied at Casterly Rock.

Maybe she will secure PTSD Awareness Training for her council. It could prove helpful.

I thought of another.

7. Qyburn's oversized crossbow thing was clearly a copy of the Black Arrow from The Hobbit. Can't you think of your own dragon-killing device, evil genius?

reply

1. Yea that was a really nice scene & it looked great as well. Don't expect to see Nymeria again though just because of the shows budget which is of course massive but there is only so much episodes left & that money will be going on the more important stuff.... Would love to see the wolf one more time though!

2. Great way to put that character back in & move Arya in the right direction to move the plot forward.

3. All Sam stuff is pretty good & I like the disgusting stuff :D Very important character that is gluing things together in the story.

4. Not really bothered about their relationship & it took too much screen time that could have been better used elsewhere BUT they are good characters and they have their fans so best using screen time at the start of the season whilst things are building up.

5. He is a bit to much like a comic book character.

6. Theon jumping off the ship was pretty hilarious... obviously not intended to be that way but it really made me laugh hard. To be fair he couldn't have done anything but jumping ship was just too funny. They should have killed him off in this episode for extra impact on top of the ship battle defeat.

Him dying whilst trying his best would have been okay to finish his redemption.

7. The over sized crossbow does make sense & I wouldn't call it a ripoff because ballistic weapons are the standard defence of a castle... they should have come up with something original though because you would have to assume that the history of dragons will have been studied to the point people in charge of defence would have better ideas than giant crossbow.

This would do: http://elementgames.co.uk/rare-units/high-elf-repeater-bolt-thrower

So yes it is a big crossbow but multiple bolts & maybe put it on a platform that can move like a turret so it slows reloading time & increases the chance of a hit.

Re 6: I didn't find Theon jumping off the ship funny, but I did LOL when Euron jumped on the ship on the ramp thing. It was just too ridiculous.

reply

Arya seemed to think that wasn't Nymeria, but if it was just some random wolf, then the pack would have eaten her and her horse, they wouldn't have just left.

The sea battle was awesome though. That ship of Euron's is an amazing design.

I thought Yara was hanging from the bow of the ship. Ellaria was taken prisoner to be Cersei's gift.

Grey worm still has 2 good hands and a mouth. If you watch the transitions, the scene immediately after his sex scene was a closeup of a man's hand ( 4 fingers held flat vertically) sliding into a narrow gap between 2 books on a bookshelf.

reply

Arya knew it was Nymeria. "It's not you" meant she couldn't go back to being someone's pet after so many years in the wild. It was a callback to something she said to her father when he told her she would marry a lord and have his babies. She said "That's Sansa. That's not me."

That wasn't Yara hanging -- it was the "bull whip" Sand Snake.

reply

»Arya knew it was Nymeria.«

I agree.
Arya’s not stupid. A wolf that size can only be a direwolf. A direwolf not killing here can only be one of the six Stark wolves. And she certainly didn’t forget how Nymeria looked.

reply

1. Arya is a lone wolf, and so is Nymeria. To me it made sense that they wouldn't reunite in that way. I haven't read that far in the books, but I do remember that Arya had dreams of wolf things (great way of phrasing it...), so they're still connected in some way, was that touched upon in the show? Anyway, it would've been nice for Arya to have Nymeria at her side, but I don't think she needs her really.

2. Great to see Hot Pie again! And I was wondering last week why Arya wasn't going to Winterfell to meet up with Jon. Now I know why. Shame they're going to miss eachother (potentially).

3. I'm starting to really ship the whole Sam/Jorah thing (if that's the correct way of using it). But that whole scene with removing the skin was tough to watch!

4. I've been waiting to see what's going to happen with these two for a while now. And I really liked how the actor playing Grey Worm delivered that... speech I guess, about the weaknesses. Great bit of acting IMO.

5. I don't like the whole Euron storyline, but I do enjoy a madman, so I'm torn on this one. And at least he's nice to look at...

I'm glad the Sand Snakes are gone! They were pointless. But I'm annoyed that they bring them back, only to kill them in the next scene. There was no wight to the whole thing one way or the other.

6. Theon is suffering from some heavy PTSD. But I think he might have saved Yara with jumping overboard. If he'd gone for Euron, he would've cut her throat then and there.

Additional:

Where is Daario? What happened to him?

Loved the whole back and forth between Daenerys and Varys. But I doubt he'll tell her to her face if she wasn't serving the people well...

I was surprised to see Melisandre at Dragonstone, I don't know why. I thought Sam and Jorah are going to inform her of the situation in the North, but that works too lol. It will be interesting to see that meeting between Daenerys and Jon. Would he really bend a knee?

...

reply

...

I don't think Jon really cares about all that political stuff, so he'll do anything to bring those dragons to fight the white walkers.

That crossbow looks like something that won't really work. Alive dragons fly around, they don't just sit there, waiting for you to shoot them.

Poor Jaime, trying to rally some support for Cersei. But I just wish that whole storyline was over yet, I've lost almost all interest in it.

Didn't care for the whole ship battle. It came out of nowhere, but it wasn't the jaw-dropping surprise I'm used to with the show.

Also, things are really moving fast this season, aren't they. These two episodes would've taken half a season in the past I feel.

reply

1: I guess that's a good point, but still would have been nice for the two of them to bond more. Arya hasn't warged yet in the show, as far as I know.

2: There's a chance they could cross paths, but I doubt it, sadly.

3: I admit I looked away for parts of that scene, lol. But I like that Sam and Jorah could be working together.

4: That weakness speech was very well done.

5: Madmen can certainly be interesting, usually in a love/hate sort of way, lol. I didn't actually hate the Sand Snakes, but they could have used better characterization and acting.

6: I agree completely.

Daario is still in Mereen. At least he's supposed to be. Dany left him there at the end of Season 6.

I think he might, depending on the situation. Dany would probably take his advice if offered.

I was expecting Melisandre, partly because of a trailer with her looking out at that long walkway thing at Dragonstone. Not sure if Jon will bend the knee or not, but I think he might if it means she'll help with fighting the White Walkers.

reply

I didn't like the way Melisandre was introduced. She just appeared in front of Daenerys, no build up whatsoever.

reply

True... But what would you have preferred for buildup? A scene of Melisandre staring into the flames and seeing Dany arrive?

reply

Melisandre was already on Dragonstone. They could've shown soldiers finding her, and then she demands to be taken to Daenerys. Or she approaches soldiers with the same request and they are puzzled with her presence because they thought that Dragonstone was abandoned. Something in that venue.

reply

Hm. Maybe, but I feel like we don't really need it. Either way, she appears out of seemingly nowhere and asks to see Dany.

reply

I don't think we can expect much build up this season, to be honest. Melisandre just appeared. That battle just happened. With the shorter season and the faster pace, sadly, I think we can expect a few other such scenes.

reply

3. Oh, I looked away violently and exclaimed a bunch during that scene! It was painful just watching, I can't imagine what it would be like living through that.

Thanks for the Daario info :). I wonder if we'll see him again this season.

If Dani truly wants to help the people (and I think she does, she has so far), she will join the fight with the white walkers. All that knee bending and political maneuvering migh be just pro forma. And as I mentioned, I don't think Jon cares that much either way.

reply

Glad I wasn't the only semi-squeamish viewer, lol.

I kinda doubt we'll see Daario again, tbh. No one important is left in Meereen, everyone is barreling towards the finale in Westeros and there isn't really much time for side-plots.

Yeah, Dany does seem to want what's best for the people, even though she also believes that she is best for the people.

Leia, HBO spent a shit-ton of money on creating that CGI Direwolf. Rendering the model for future episodes would cost far less and would justify the cost of producing the model. Apropos of production budget, why does HBO care? GoT at first cost $6 million per ep. That figure rose to $10 million/ep last season, where it remains. Fucking FRIENDS cost that much--for a half-hour show!--30 years ago. GoT makes so much money for HBO, in terms of subscriptions and box-sets of each season alone, that it constitutes a license to print money. Westworld has the identical budget and I don't see HBO cutting the number of episodes to lower it. Does anyone know why the network wants to starve its marquee program, 'cause I sure don't?!

reply

I know that direwolves are expensive, for whatever reason. Why would that price go down for future episodes? And if that's the case, why haven't we seen more of Ghost?

Still waking up here, so sorry if I misunderstood your post.

reply

Huh?
In various BluRay audio commentaries, they mentioned that the direwolfs aren’t CGI but real wolfs which are filmed separately on a different location (I think they said somewhere in the USA) and then digitally pasted into the picture.
That was what made the direwolfs so expensive, because they have to pay the animal trainer, a lot of takes are needed until the wolf is doing what he is supposed to do etc.

I don’t know if they changed that approach at some point since I haven’t listend to all the commentaries.
So, did they decide to use full-CGI wolfs instead?

I have to admit I didn’t look close enough at Nymeria to see whether she’s CGI or real… I was too excited at that moment!

reply

I don't think we're going to see Nymeria again but I really hope I'm wrong.
