Despite Plotholes, a Very Entertaining Film
I meant to watch this years ago when it first came out. I finally got around to seeing it on FX last night. It was very good and entertaining.
I was never really a fan of Jolie's work prior to Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Since then, I've enjoyed her movies. This movie, along with The Tourist, shows she can do the spy/action genre pretty well. The plot moves along pretty briskly and the holes are not quite as apparent until after they've passed. Even with them, its hard not to like the overall feel of the movie.
Jolie plays Salt, an intelligence agent for the CIA. A recently defected Russian spy names her as a mole. Her colleagues assume the worst and she escapes and goes on the run to clear her name. Her boss, played by the ever superb Liev Schreiber, chases her to try and save her from herself while the always reliable Chiwetel Ejiofor plays an FBI agent intent on bringing her down. A planned assassination triggers questions about who is who and whose side everyone is on. Halfway through the movie, there is a twist, which then leads to a second, entirely different film. A second twist at the end is kind of lame, but it doesn't feel contrived and it makes for some suspense. I understand there are several endings to the movie, but the one I saw left it open for a sequel.
I understand the part of Salt was originally intended for Tom Cruise. Thank god they changed it and Jolie took the role. Cruise is okay in the Mission: Impossible films, but he would have ruined this one.
My memory foam pillow says it can't remember my face. I can tell its lying.
