Didn't unterstood the role of her husband

What was the whole role of her husband in the movie good for?

It didn't seem to fit at all, just confused me. Ok, he was a spider scientist and so she got easier into korea, but what did this matter for whole plot? Korea didn't play any role in that movie beside the introductional scene.

She was using his research and contacts. She was using him as a cover. But it got turned around and she fell in love with him.

He was there to show that Salt was able to break free from her brainwashed childhood through true love.

If this was what the movie was trying to show us, then if was truly an epic fail ;)

(Remember that she killed her husband, call that true love?)

The movie was messy. But I thought Jolie did a good job.

She didn't kill her husband. Her handlers did to test her loyalty. They didn't trust her and only let their guard down after the murder.

Truthfully I don't see how she didn't know that was the way it would turn out. But then again maybe she did and hoped she would be able to save him.

reply

No, it wasn't a fail. I think a lot of people WH saw thus were expecting her to fight her way out a a situation where she was outnumbered and heavily out-gunned without the element of surprise. She had no choice but to kill her husband.

Does she kill her husband in the theatrical cut? I've only seen the director's cut and in that version she is forced to watch while her co-conspirators drown him. It's a really harrowing scene and her true feelings about it are made clear when she massacres the lot of them the first chance she gets.

reply

No, she doesn't kill him! I don't know what movie people saw, but she neither kills him in the theatrical nor the director's cut version.

Had I been told earlier that sharing a sense of humor was so vital, I could've avoided a lot of sex

Originally the main character was meant to be male and that would have been his wife. The trope is called "women in refrigerators". The idea is that the love interest is killed off to give the main character the fury and passion to do what needs to be done. That is why the husband is such a passive figure. He isn't a macho man, he's just the love interest and the 'damsel in distress'.

He was a spider scientist, he kept pet spiders, and Salt used spider venom to fake the death of the Russian President. She was shown extracting venom into a syringe in their apartment before she escaped onto the ledge (not really the way venom is collected, but that's not important).

What kind of spider was it?

reply

I thought it was a black widow - judging from shape. Milking venom - people actually do that -- was silly with a syringe. Wouldnt get "venom" per se - just spider goo.

Over all - the script is pretty much a mess.

In the version I saw she came down the steps, she looked at him and a very brief tender smile came over her face... But then he was suddenly shot in the chest by one of the Russians! It all happened really quickly and I rewound it to watch it again. She had to act as if she was not bothered, but deep inside she was devastated! Hence her killing the entire troupe of Russians. Also remember she saved the dog and gave it to the little girl saying "Please look after him", she fully expected to be back with her husband and dog in a matter of days. She had no idea all of what happened was going to happen. Thats my take on it anyway?

With regard to the dog, my take was the exact opposite. I thought the fact that she took the trouble to give it to her neighbour implied she thought she probably wasn't coming back.

Do you seriously ask for this question ? Really ? Her husband has everything to do in this movie. He plays a big role. That's what supporting characters are for.
