The Subway commercials...

Did anyone else find those ridiculous? Not even necessarily annoying or frustrating, but ridiculous. They were just so blatant and explicitly commercial. Every time they did one I found myself bursting out in laughter. I mean, there's product placement, and then there's this... They didn't even TRY to hide it or blend it with the dialogue. Just straight up 5-10 seconds suddenly dedicated to talking about Subway in the most corporate style speak possible.

The reason for that was (incase you didn't know) after NBC cancelled the show at the end of season 2, there was a Subway fan campaign to bring back the show, and it worked. Some of the Subway appearances in the show were funny, others I just rolled my eyes. I think the biggest product placement that seemed so randomly put in there was when Awesome was showing off his new Toyota in season 4 and was listing all the features that the car had

That was a part of the show's charm. It was always a very consciously self-aware show. They thrived on TV tropes, both employing them ironically and subtly mocking them even as they earnestly honored the innovators who everyone copied that made the tropes in to tropes. The product placement was a part of that. They were very aware that the fans knew that they saved and funded the show through direct marketing. The over the top placement was a nod and a wink to the fans, most of whom, like you, got a good laugh out of it.

So many shows try to be subtle about their product placement. Chuck was so blatantly obvious that it was funny. And clever.

Agreed. Chuck's obvious product placement was always tongue-in-cheek.

Here's an example of one that isn't. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp3fDM_GELw

As someone who watched on Netflix and not when it originally aired, and knowing what happened with Subway keeping the show going, I always though they were funny, because they were so blatant. I also liked that Big mike always seemed to be the spokesman for them.

I loved the Subway product placements! haha I actually started eating Subway because of Chuck. I remember I was a Freshman in college and eating one every Monday on campus for lunch because of that show.haha

My favorite Chuck Subway moment was when Casey pissed off Jeff and Lester in Season 3 and to keep the peace, he had to share a Subway sandwich with Jeff.

After 5 Years of Chuck, I have learned that at the end the nerd will ALWAYS get the girl. Chuck me.
